Is this Osage Orange?

Ok, found a new scrounge spot. Picked up five rounds of this. There were monkey balls on the roadside near where I snagged these. Is it really hedge wood?!!! I have been driving by these chunks for a while now, and today I stopped at a house nearby and spoke to the owner. He has given me free reign to scrounge and cut in his woods! There is a bunch of black and honey locust, got stuck by some thorns. A bunch of other stuff, some already bucked, a lot of trees laying ready to buck. Very close to my house, so glad I stopped! I am in btu Heaven! I thanked the nice man and am eager to go back and grab more. So, did I do gooder?
Ps, sorry for absence this week... caught a little Fall cold and have been laying low. Happy Friday the 13th!!

That is what we call the fruit of the Osage Orange up around here. I need to locate my camera to take better pics, I misplaced it in a cold medicine induced stupor after snapping some pics of a huge hawk in a tree earlier in the week. My daughter and I picked up some monkey balls too, so I will show you.
This wood is vibrant yellowy orange and very dense. I have a trunkload of locust too.

I have never been afraid to ask, the worse they can say is no. I have been looking for a good place to score locust wood. I hit the gold mine! He does burn, but only splits by hand and his woodshed is full. Looks like he has a couple acres of woods, and he said he has way more than he needs. Rather see it utilized instead of rotting.

 

So what's the diameter on that? I haven't come across any hedge that big, but if its got the apples its got to be it.

 

I'll admit, I counted around 90 rings but could only zoom so much.

How big have you seen? I figured they'd do well up there.

 

I have the stump cut too, will take pics when I get home. At least 14-16" across I think, I just had to dump it at home and run out to pick up my friend. Be home in a bit.

 

I haven't come across it more than 8" or so across. Too many are treated as pests and don't get the chance to grow up.

I've seen Osage Orange/Hedge to about 18" at waist high. Heavy, heavy, wood when green..............oak, mulberry heavy!!!!

I'm jealous!!!

 

Seed balls about the size of a softball or a bit less with a ripply green surface are hedge apples. If you break them open each bump on the surface is a seed location. If that is what you are calling monkey balls, you can bet you have hedge. Along the hiking trail in our village park there are lots of them up to about 24 inches DBH.
