Am I the only one here boring and nerdy enough to collect US coinage? Been collecting since I was 12...lately been getting into some of the commemoratives, etc......why? I dunno.....my heirs will probably only squander them on something stupid......
I have a small collection of coins pennies ,nickles, dimes, quarters ,50 cent's and silver dollars ,that I got from my grand parents .
I used to 40 years ago. Then the house was broken into, and that was the only thing stolen. Never started again, but I do keep any silver I find. Greg
oddly, that's how I got started. My grandfather had no real interest, but he would save the "odd" coins that came through his store...a few commemoratives, indian heads, mercs, etc. I would look at them as a kid, till I started doing the same thing...then went to coin shows, etc. Had a bit of a hiatus when I has my kids though....had to save money. Started back up again 20 years ago or so. Sadly, my grandfather passed and his old coins went to one of his kids (my aunt), who really has no interest, but she felt they might be valuable (they aren't, pretty worn circulated pieces). Id still like to have them, for memory's sake, but its not worth the hassle. I have a pretty good smattering of coins from about 1800 and on- started it as a type collection. Mostly silver, but some gold as well...not much of that though, that stuff is more expensive than Doug M.'s Okanagan Firs!
I had my first coin stolen under similar circumstances...break-in....from then on, I always kept my coins in the bank vault, where I'm the only signatory......the fee is tax deductible even!
I hear ya the silver coins I got from my grand parents , I'll never sell just means to much to me . I have coins from 1902 when they were born
I have those blue books that hold coins. There's one or two for each denomination. The penny starts at 1909 and goes to 1958 (Wheat penny). I have every penny for every year including the D and S mint marks. Every penny except one; the 1909S VDB. I've seen them for sale but at an average going price of $800, I'm afraid that spot in the book will always be empty.
Yep....it's a hard core penny collector who springs for those. Not me. I do like some of the commemoratives though.....lol.....like those 5 oz silver state park quarters....5 ounces of silver with a legal denominational value of 25 cents! The thing is the size of a coaster!
