I agree, but my wife said something to the effect that if she hates the insert, she wants the fireplace back. I hope that she loves the insert. I've got great firewood, so that won't be at issue.

x2 on all, and also have a mobile welder's number in your back pocket, as our flexible liner did not flex enough.....

In my limited experience, dampers are at most held in by two bolts with cotter pins on the back corners and you might need to mess with the catch in the middle to get it out of the way.

Wives like the heat. Mine was reluctant as well. Once they can see the fire through the glass and sit in an 80+ degree room when its 30 outside they never want to go back.

Mine misses the crackle n pop of the burning. But I tell her when she misses we can just open the door. And hear it. As flames are pulled 6 foot up the chimney and we get our eye brows burnt off and have to wear sunglasses its so hot!

Worse she is going to do is complain about the noise from the squirrel cage if you have the fan turned all the way up.

My installer took the Sawzall to my damper. I cringed as it was my first time having wood heat and worrring about possibly removing the insert down the road.

Now I could care less. That thing isn't coming out. Sell house with insert. Period.

With a fire view window like that, how could a wife not like it?

I remember seeing a homemade rig using a wooden frame, 1 " iron pipe and 1 1/2" pvc pipe covering the iron pipe. They worked the bottom few feet of the round pipe in between the two rollers. Once through the damper, they opened the end back to round to fit in the appliance connector. I remember one of the rollers were adjustable to progressively tighten down to ovalize the flex liner. Professional advice may be needed on this. I know some flex companies ovalize the bottom few feet.

I've got a squirrel cage on my heatilator style wood rack now. She's used to that noise, and I would be shocked if this one on the insert is louder than the heatilator.

I have to take measurements of the damper, and post pics of the pieces I have, especially the top plate.

I was thinking I need one of these.
    Terra-Cotta - Top Plate - 13"x13" | WoodlandDirect.com: Chimney Liners

I like that this one has the edges that go over the edge, like flashing. The one I got with the insert is flat, with no edges rolled down.

Yea those are better. The one I have in the farm install is just a flat plate that is siliconed down. Just like your talking. Its just flat panel with a hole for the liner to go through. I like the one you just linked too. But at the farm I have just a single brick chimney

I see. I think I can simply use my existing cap, over the flat top plate.

I'll post up a pic of what I am working with. I did measure the camper, and asides from the center hardware, its 6", so it should be easier than the chimney/damper it came out of. There's definitely more room in my fp/ damper than the one it was installed in.

Yeah, I remeasured the damper opening tonight due to no fire since it's warm ish out. It's basically 6", maybe a 16th less. I think it's at least an inch wider of an opening, maybe 2" more than the damper opening that this insert was pulled from. That will help immensely.

Maybe I'll snap a picture of the damper, but, while theres a little hardware to open or close it, all but a tab on the back and an "arm" on the front that might be a small obstruction.

The damper plate isn't bolted or clipped on at all, the rod is though, and appears to be easily removed.

I've got a couple choices for running the SS insert through the damper:

    1. Run the liner offset from the center, using the offset adapter.

    2. Just run the liner down the center and maybe bend the brackets out of the way if needed.

    3. Grinding these tabs off is my last choice, but if done cleanly, I can weld them back on if ever needed.

Avoid that offset box if at all possible. It will make your life much easier when cleaning the pipe.
