This monster is on the drop soon list, first photo is my 390 with 20" bar sitting on a knot. Second is northeast side, camera resting on bark at 8' up off the ground and third is southeast side 20' back looking up, camera @ 8'. Believe it's an oak, maybe someone can confirm or deny?
The bark looks like oak at the very bottom but not above your saw. It's hard to tell from those pictures though. Anyway, make sure that tree is solid inside before you take it down. Looks like a mess-be careful.
I'm thinking letting old man winter play with it one more season, it's pretty rough bout 5 ft up someone ran a saw in it bout 5 inches and walked away many year ago, has alot of rot around behind the handle of my saw in the first picture, and porcupines have been ripping the hell out of the base, I can almost sit in it
Almost looks like a big old cherry to me. If she is rotting be darn careful she don't barber chair on you.
My first thought was yellow birch, but the bark is the wrong color. Could be a black birch. If it smells strongly of wintergreen when you cut it, it is definitely a birch. I'd like to have that to cut.
I was thinking it was a cherry, but switched my deciding when another guy working in the back grids was talking about it and thought oak. I've never heard of black birch, never seen it, and if this was it, I'm going to be cutting the only known one in this region.
That looks like a big old yellow birch to me. We have some like that around our camp. Be real careful that it doesn't drop a limb on your head as it goes over and be wary of a hollow trunk or internal rot.
I agree with Paul bunion. Also, that tree is very dangerous. Hope you have someone with you while you drop it. I had one kick back at me. But for the Will of God, it missed me. The snap was faster than my eyes could see.
