these saws are a blast to "play" around with, they can still be had pretty reasonable and have lots of potential, here's one i redid a couple years ago, on this one i used a oem mahle closed port 268 cylinder with a 266 pop up piston and caber ring, deleted the base gasket and used a 268 carb, finally had the joy of putting it to work for the first time a few weeks back, it really surprised me just how well this saw ran, i've done three other saws of this same platform and all have run excellent, i'll post up more pics of the others as the thread moves along, just wanted to share..........
Looks great! I have had a 66 for over 20 years. I think about buying a new saw of that size, but that old saw just keeps chugging along.
Couldn't agree more - the 61's are competent saws - good power from an old design. Anti-vibe pretty good too - doesn't tire me out to run mine for good long while. My few complaints include the lack of recesses on the carb box to more easily access the carb mounts, and the dreaded front chain tensioner - PITA. Otherwise, real solid saw and simple design for builds like yours and others. I have two early black top runners - the third is an early white top practica - burned top end but otherwise pretty nice - hope to do a build at some point with that one. Nice to have it for parts though too - sheared the flywheel key on my 162se last week - stole the key from the practica and back up an running quick! Nice work! Cheers!
I really do miss the 162, on that one i only deleted the base gasket and installed a caber ring seeing it already has a closed port cylinder, i just wanted to see how much better it would run by doing just those mods, i was quite happy...................i hope you are with it now.......................the pic is from before i found a nos top cover, BTW, did you ever find the drive sprocket you needed for it?
Yep! Another member pointed me toward the correct drum and rim drive so all set! Finally got to try her out last week - strong runner for sure! She weeps gas from the bottom metal seam of the rear handle - slowly - going to try to come up with a fix for that without replacing the original tank, but otherwise what a nice condition 162 - happy to own it as a bit of Husky History! Is that just a practica top cover on the 162 (minus the practica sticker) or did the 162 come in a white top at some point? You sure do find some honeys in this family! Cheers!
glad you like it!..................that saw sat on the trade'n post over on A.S. for several months with no takers, i finally broke down and contacted the seller and made an offer and it was a deal........the top cover that was on it had been cut near the muffler, not bad but i wanted to replace it, i waited for a nicer one to show up on the bay, i bought the one that's on it now, it was listed as used, but turned out to be nos!, i just used the 61 white top for a while until i found the one that's on it now.........
this one received a cheapy aftermarket 272 cylinder kit, just wanted try some mild port work on a cheapy in case of trouble, but it turned out well, no base gasket and just the work i did to the cylinder, i did use a caber ring, all else is 272, carb, manifold, ect......still runs very well and i still use it on occasion...................since these pics, i changed out the air filter and elbow for the larger/later style...
here's one i bought with the intentions of another swap, when the saw arrived it was clear that it couldn't have been used more than a handful of times and and still ran as new, so it stayed stock and i sold it later on for a tidy profit...........
