I just found this one this morning. It must have came down in the windstorm this week. It's been leaning on another tree ever since I bought the property. It fell right across my main trail. The stump is just about 60' from the one that came down a couple weeks ago: the very top of it just barely hit the 16' log that I left. Started work a little before noon, and had everything except for 3 8' logs hauled up to the house and sawn into rounds by 3:30. I think it's about 2/3 cord. Might hafta head back out there and get some of it split too - real nice firewood'n weather today.
No it's a red. Yeah Ma Nature's gotta work on her widowmaker +/- back there... These last 2 maples have been real nice drops though!
Good btu's either way, and red dries faster. I see that, I don't see why a good wind storm wouldn't drop that.
Good job Shawn. How do you get those logs up on the saw horse? You just bull em up there? They look heavy.
Yeah, basically. They actually go onto the sawhorse pretty easy, once I have them on the trailer. If I can lift one end, I can flop it onto the trailer whole and saw it up the rest of the way at the house. I like doing it that way; its hard work but I can load up whole trees pretty quick like that. I got about 1/2 of it split tonight too.
The true definition of a windfall Shawn, good on you. The end grain in the 5th pic down is interesting with the merging of the heartwood into the outside. I wonder how it would look with a rip cut? (hint, hint)
Yeah, it looks like its got a little 'spalting' to it already. It will probably end up looking something like this...
