I have an older Stihl 031AV that i no longer need (purchased a new 251 today) I am going to try to sell it on Craigs list, I have 3 chains with it, one brand new, one freshly sharpened and one on the saw, also a newer bar. It has been sitting for several years, i put fresh gas in to today and it fired up after about 15 pulls and ran decent. What do you think it is worth?
$100-$200max... the extra chains help a bit. I keep going back to this post thinking that $200 would be way over-valued, but then again it isn't my saw and I'm not sure of the niche 031s may have with stihl heads in your area haha. Edit--- Why not keep it?
Cosmetic condition has so much effect on value that I don't think we can say what it's worth without pictures, but chances are good that BuckthornBonnie is right on. $200 gets you an 026 in most parts of the country, with a bit more displacement, four pounds less weight and better parts availability, and the 031 is so common that nobody gets excited about them.
Since I do not know about chainsaws I am compelled to reply here. My father tried to sell his camper for a year, then tried to give it away. Then he asked me to find it a new home for free (I had no takers either). Later he asked to get it out of his yard. Before we moved it for him I posted it on ebay. It sold for $1250 on ebay. Lots of pics, all flaws either shown and hidden ones described. A thought if you want to try it.
Fyi, I might be interested, after seeing some pics. I only want one to use for parts in order to get my dad's up and running for sentimental value.
I may keep it, just don't cut a lot of wood and was hoping to recoup some of the cost of the new one.
Post it for 250 or 225 and see what you get. At least at that price you can work down to the reasonable range. Post at 175, and get worked to 150.....
Unless you're selling on the forum, that's what I'd do. Around where I live people still pay stupid prices for beat up 029/290's. As long as people realize that an 031 is the same as a Farm Boss with more displacement, you might be surprised what people will pay for it.
I can see your line of reasoning in your previous post. However the 0xx to MS xxx happened a quite a bit after the 031 era.
That's one model that did not have an 0xx predecessor. (MS310) Gets folks all the time. There have been plenty of 031s on CL here that sit for weeks at $150 or less. I have a good running example that I haven't bothered to list.
I wouldn't go the high price route. if i saw it i wouldn't even bother if the price was rediculous. I think 175 is a good mark with the extras you have listed. David
I hate 031's. I think the most I ever got from a like new one was $100. I mean like new too. One of those pretty looking saws you all like. $50 norm for used looking.
