So I finally had a day off where I could clean the chimney and woodstove its done but I went through hell. I started out just fine running the brush up but I noticed that dust was going everywhere so I grabbed the shop vac and tried to suck it up as I was going but that wasnt happening so I turned off the AC opened the front door and placed a couple fans there blowing out. Everything was ok got the chimney cleaned there was mostly just that light brown fluffy stuff all the way with a little bit of hard black stuff in the top 4ft. There is still dust floating around but its getting better so I grab my ash can and clean out the stove get most of it out and use the shop vac to finish up as Im finishing I look behind me and the house is filled with ash with a steady stream of it blowing out of the vac Vac goes out the front door and upon inspection the filter had fallen off so needless to say the house was full of ash smoke detectors were going crazy and I was furious I let the dust settle and started cleaning up I vacuumed and mopped and dusted and wiped everything down. What was supposed to be an hour long job at the most ended up taking over three hours and Im sure that I will have to to dust mop and vacuum again tomorrow On a positive note the stove is ready to rock whenever it gets around to being cold enough for it. I think Im going to go have a case of beer now relax
I did the same thing recently with my pellet stove. Sucked up most the ash, guess there were still some coaling ones in the burn pot. They burned a hole in the shop vac bag............Ash EVERYWHERE
I can't I imagine what a mess that caused. I can relate to that. I had that happen with sheet rock dust. When I clean the stove, I set the shop vac out on the porch and attach 2 sections of hose to reach the stove.
Wow what a massive pain!! My wife would have killed me!!! She tolerates a lot from me but that would have sent her over the edge.
Luckily, my wife wasn't home when I got the shop vac filter smokin'. Got it out the door quick, got the top off, and put out the smokage. Needed a new filter anyway.
Im alone for the weekend but she did just text me saying she would be on the way soon. I told her to take her time and give it few hours. I need to mop and wipe down the furniture again
I'd "like" this post but that'd just be WRONG! Sorry,to hear of your unfortunate day yesterday! Now go have some beers!!
What a day for sure , man o man , you'll probably be finding dust to clean up for next few weeks , bummer
I've only cleaned my liner once but this seemed to work pretty good. Poke a whole about 1/4 of the way down a garbage bag with rod. Attach brush, start brush in chimney, tape bag to pipe. Start scrubbing. With my knack of making a mess this worked well.
Yeah I thought about that as I watched the dust fly oh well next time maybe. I would love to clean from the top down then I could seal the bottom and catch everything but the way my chimney runs makes it rather unsafe and uncomfortable for me to be up there.
When I need to brush, I wait for a day when it will be a lot cooler outside than inside; That way there's a pretty decent draft to suck the dust out instead of it coming into the room. As far as the ShopVac, I've got burned like that before so now I always take the lid off and check before I use it. A couple of times there has been a hole blown in the bag, probably from sucking up something sharp, and the dust will blow straight through.
