Now that I've brought a facecord indoors and started using it, I have space to fill in the outside racks. Yesterday the new owners of a couple of neglected properties advertised the wood from trees they'd had taken down in the course of rehabbing. I picked up a load of mulberry before lunch. Today I think I'll grab some of the cherry, which is only 2 miles from home. It's impossible to tell from the photo in the first ad, but the mulberry is on top of a 6' retaining wall on the edge of an alley. I only had to shove the chunks off the precipice, back up to the pile, and pick them up. The yard is full of wood, but it's also carpeted with so much brush and downed vines that you can't find the ground or carry anything through it safely. Also hard to tell from the pics in the second ad, the cherry is better than 30" DBH. I can probably take my time getting there, without fear that the wood will disappear before I arrive. Now that's a home run! I would be all over that Mulberry that's already bucked up. How are you going to deal with the big rounds? Splitting them there on site or noodling them? Might be enough wood in that honey hole to take care of all your wood this year.....
Cherry does dry faster, all else being equal. Probably some noodling and some splitting on-site, yes. It's situations like this that make me happy to have an 044 and a 28" bar for it.
And I owe you for finding me that 044 from Detroit.... Do you have room to store some of it in your driveway or somewhere, just so someone else doesn't grab the easy stuff? You need that guy to take it off Craigslist...
Sounds like you're enjoying that saw. Has it seen more use since you got it than during its entire life before that? I don't have room to store much, so I'll only get a load or two of the cherry. I typically bring wood home about half of a facecord at a time, split it and get it up in the racks within a day or so, which is a nice rhythm to get into through the winter; it keeps things neat, and gets me out of the house. The only time I've managed to get a large amount from one scrounge was when the property owner let me stack splits in his suburban backyard in the middle of winter, and leave them there all summer until I had room to take them. That was a nice situation.
I have used that saw and yes probably more than its entire life before that. But to be upfront, I also baby it to try to keep it in pristine condition. It's not my "go to saw", only use it on the big stuff. I got bummed when the made in Germany sticker started to come off I that tells you anything.... I'm like you, I cut, split and stack it. I would have a problem with a bunch of rounds hanging around for months. But in your case with limited space, I would make an exception to get as much of that wood as I could. Love this saw..... Gah, the homeowners with the cherry tree changed their minds. After considering that the house they're rehabbing has three fireplaces, they decided to keep the wood for themselves. I suspect they'll be overwhelmed when they start trying to process it, so I left my number just in case.
You are going to love that mulberry. I just cut a dangerous branch off one of mine today. It was about 8 inches diameter and threatening my tool shed. I bucked it until I started to feel the heat and then stopped and split 2 wheel barrow loads. Actually the bucking was going well but I had to haul all of the tiny stuff to the street for the village to come by tomorrow and chip it up. All that hauling was what was working up a sweat. Although there were a lot of twists and weird angles in that branch the splitting took all of about 2 minutes per wheel barrow load with my X27. I bet I could have split it by breathing hard on it.
