I'm starting a long term video project for Firewood Hoaders TV and I need some input from you guys. What do you do (related to firewood, saws, equipment, stoves, chimney and anything else I forgot) the month of January?
In January I'll clean the chimney. If the weather allows, I would like to cut or just clear the trails after the ice storm we just had. The saws I just take the air compressor to after each use, I'll also change the spark plug.
I do the same stuff in January that I do the other 11 months of the year - work in the woods 2-3 days when weather and schedule allows it.If there's deep snow, strong winds or temps below zero I stay inside however.Tend to burn the denser woods (White Oak,Honey Locust,Shagbark Hickory) on the coldest days, like this morning happened to be.On really bad weather days if I feel like doing anything its usually tinkering on the saws, routine maintenance, that sort of thing.
While everyone complains about this time of year and how awful it is outside, I on the other hand look at this as the best time of the year. It's too cold, snowy or wet outside to get anything done. It gets dark way too early. So I spend each evening in front of a warm fire and get in some relaxing that is so difficult the rest of year to find. Oh. and I'll come here and read up on what all you are doing.
Well, this year it looks like I'll be spending an inordinate amount of time plowing snow. Usually, the cold months are spent mostly inside (aside from plow duties). When I had log loads, I'd spend an hour or two 3-4 days/week c/s/s during the cold months to keep me from becoming a complete blimp. I'll be working on the house this winter (inside work).
( firewood ) I spend my time scrounging when I can. Craigslist, roadside sightings and coworkers mostly. ( Saws ) They are stored in cases on top of my benches. After every use they get blown off with an air compressor and the gas and oil drained out then run the carb dry. The chains and bars come off for cleaning right away as well. Before each use I flush the oil tank out with gas if there is debris in it if not I just fill it with oil. ( Equipment ) My helmet, chaps, and gloves are stored in the garage on coat hooks. The axes, chains, oil, gas, log jack / cant and small toolbox for the saws are all stored in the truck box. All I need to do is toss my saws, chaps, helmet and gloves in the box and run when it's time. ( Splitter ) Ok here I'm a bit more anal! A splitter was a major investment for us so it gets babied possibly to much. It is stored in the garage and hardly ever sees rain or snow. Before I split it gets a good looking over to be sure everything is tightened up and not cracked. The hydraulic oil was the best stuff I could afford and the motor oil was too. After each use I wipe it all down to clean it and oil the beam so it won't rust then again double check that everything is tight. Even though it's in the garage I have a hitch lock so no unwanted borrowings happen ( that's happened twice ) which really ticked me off. When I tow it I go 45 to be safe or carry it in the trailer ( my preferred option) so that nothing comes loose or breaks. When it's being towed I put a Ziplock over the oil hydraulic tank breather hole so it won't leak all over cuz that stuff ain't cheap......... When in use I almost never run full throttle it's not necessary for time sake unless there is 2 people there.
Ah January. First thing is we keep hoping for a good January thaw! Wood cutting is always the prime thing we like to do but sometimes it just gets too cold and occasionally the snow get a bit deep. This year might be interesting. It is difficult getting around in the woods because of the ice storm we had. But I still have lots of work cutting up a lot of trees for a neighbor. These are the trees that we got help from Pete, wishlist and AC. We have some of them cleaned up but still lots to go. Haven't touched it for a week now. January also usually brings time for those indoor projects when it is nasty outdoors. It also gives us time to spend with families. In our case, my wife and I like to work on jigsaw puzzles in the winter months and we got several more for Christmas. Another thing that happens is that I spend time daily on the bicycle which is fastened to a trainer in the house.
I like dropping yard trees in Jan. Less damage from the drop and the trucks when the ground is frozen. If the snow gets deep, that's a good opportunity to take down trees near sensitive areas on the golf course too.
Right on the money Andy, I have almost the same situation. My second job slows in the winter and I enjoy some much needed down time, which also includes regular stove time.
A man after my own heart. The Holiday season is so busy for me at the bakery plus my other job that come a couple months of evenings to enjoy what I pine away for all year is so much welcomed.
Ok guys, here's my general outline for the January episode. Yes, not everything is listed-- there is a lot of winter months to spread everything out over. If anyone is going to clean their chimney soon, please consider making a video of the process and letting me use it Code: -Check flu/clean the chimney -Burn the good stuff -Yard trees -Beware weather -Relax after holidays
I have been processing firewood- everything from dropping trees thru stacking the splits. I have also cleaned the chimney and burned a lot of firewood this January.
