If you are like me, you're new to this and you are interested in how much work and effort is involved in cutting or felling trees and splitting wood. Well, I was nosing around on youtube and I came up upon this great video. :)

    From the video description:

"This video is a complete description of what's involved in preparing a cord of wood for sale or personal use. After viewing, I think you'll agree that a cord of wood for less than $200.00 in 2013 is a bargain - especially if it's delivered to your door."
I dunno if I agree with that; but this is great video on showing how it's done, especially if you are one person.

Needless to say, working with wood and more importantly, burning it ---- is a big investment. One well worth it. But, just the same, it really isn't for everyone. :)

He needs a mic nearer to his mouth!!
Neat vid. Good days work for one guy or one dusky!
Little more overhead than I personally got in it- no tractor here....
Maybe if that fella sells that cord he can get a pair of chaps, gloves and safety glasses, especially for when he was blocking the trunk.... Unless those were cut proof dungarees. IDK if he said so because of the audio quality:confused:.
Plus, VT Tech is playing so kinda hard to hear much more than my wife whooping it up during some nearly back to back Tech touchdowns:eek:

Stay safe ChuckinMichigan when you're out there solo, man!

Can't believe I watched a large part of that.
I admire the gentleman's strength, but he could use a cant hook.
And I admire his skin of steel, but I could not split/stack oak without gloves. (And furthermore, it beats the heck out of the gloves.)

What he showed is a small part of getting trees outta the woods, and it helps a TON to have some equipment to help.
When you're carrying rounds one at a time 150 feet or more in your arms, that's where the real fun is.
Anyway, you're right, it really isn't for everyone.

Must be nice to have a tractor bucket to put the log on the splitter for you. One reason I don't care for the big logs.
He sure is a methodical fella.

    You might be a redneck....:rofl: :lol::whistle:
I'm too old for that kinda distance. I like to saw about an 8' log outa the trunk and drag it with the truck to the splitting area(if possible), clean the bark of dirt and work it there after. Sure I gotta sharpen my chain a little more often, but my back thanks me for it:thumbs:

I really enjoyed the part where he was talking facing the camera while the saw was running, then he turned it off and walked away.
    I LOL.
Oh, and he never did give a final time.

Had a hernia I didn't know about at the time too.:headbang:
I won't allow myself to use that method anymore.....too time consuming, and my back will thank me.

Ouch! How was it you didn't know you had a hernia, Dave? Was it not popping out?
I'm starting into an inguinal hernia(left lower abdomen, under the belt line), will need it meshed up soon, but it ain't fully pronounced itself.

LOL I have watched that vid twice within the past year. I don't work everyday, but when I work I do the work of three people. I need to play catch up, my kiddos have kept me busy the past couple weeks. The wood pile is calling!

"I don't work everyday, but when I'd do, I make amazing piles of wood!"

    Stay busy, my friend....

I too was shaking my head when he did that. :picard:
But hey, I give him full marks for effort . Anybody can take a quick video of something and post it on youtube, but when you start trying to put together something instructional or informative with progressive structure and then editing the various clips together, it starts to become a lot of work. In fact, my guess is it took him more time to edit that video then it did to process that cord of wood.

Oh yeah, no doubt. He put a lot of effort into that.
I just thought it was funny, because it reminded me of my wife trying to talk to me while there's noise all around and she's walking away from me at the other end of the house......then get upset that I can't hear her.:headbang::rofl:

She thinks I need hearing aids, which may very well be true, but when she's in her sewing room, and I'm in the kitchen (40' away) with my head in the fridge, and the dogs are barking......it's a bit tough to hear her whisper.:hair::BrianK:

That would kill me ... sometimes what I do now practically kills me. I almost always take a hand truck with me to haul rounds from the cutting site to where I can get my tractor and cart. Only a couple weeks ago finished cutting up a white oak that required 66 steps up a hill to get to my trailer (yes I counted as it took about 25 trips to get it all out) . Lifting them into the cart can be a challenge sometimes if I get a bit lazy with the noodling of large rounds.

I haven't watched much of it yet but what I did watch I was not impressed, especially with his splitting. It would take one man a long to do it his way and if you have to have a tractor to get the logs to the splitter then split only one or 2 rounds before shutting down the splitter and starting the tractor to go get a couple more, well, a lot of wasted effort and time there and trying to make use of too much equipment. I think this is where a lot of folks get bogged down is thinking you have to have so much equipment when in actuality, you need very little equipment to make firewood.

Yeah, there's plenty of room for efficiency improvements, but he said he wanted to show how much work it is to do wood, so it would be counter to his point.

Don't do it, hearing aids are for people who like to listen to other people.
