My logger buddies were in the area so I stopped up to see them and took the trailer to get some log cut offs. When I got home I had to saw up the chunks into rounds so I could handle them, they are pretty fair sized even when cut up. After cutting a round off I saw these little guys inside unhurt but very frightened. They had a rough day, as they were sitting in their tree, it got cut and they rode it to the ground, which was then pulled by the skidder to the landing where it was sawed up. This being defective was tossed to the side and thrown in my trailer for a ride of about 6 miles then had their little hidey hole sawn in half. These were some fair sized chunks.
Yep, sawed right through a nest of red squirrels once. Was in a hollow spruce that broke off high enough that I couldn't see in it. The hounds wouldn't stop howling at it and I finally got tired of listening to them. Sawed right through a couple of the babies.
just termites and ants and a few empty bird nests. Question is - did you cook up the squirrels? Oh wait, you're not in the deep south, so disregard....
I don't see any blood, I take it they managed to somehow avoid getting caught in the chain as it sawed through only inches away from them?
One fella at work said his daughter's friend who (or is it whom?) works for Asplundah dropped some power line encroaching trees down and brought her 3 baby flying squirrels that he found in a round... Fast forward to yesterday- when asked, he said, "me and my wife are raising the @&$#% flying rats and now they're old enough to get into everything!" His wife posted a pic of the cage he built for them on FB, and he said, "I told her to delete that @£%€ off her page, 'cos it's illegal to keep them." I work with folks who have very red skin above there shoulders.... At least they mean well
Yep, I've dropped a few trees that had squirrel grenades in them. They hit the ground and squirrels went everywhere!
I was cutting a downed locust a few years ago. The center of the log was hollow. Making a bucking cut and noticed blood on the bar. Turns out I also bucked a 4 ft black snake that was in the log.
I have a friend whose family were loggers. He said his granddad cut into a tree that had a raccoon inside of it. Scared him to death when he saw all the blood on his saw.
Out back the neighbors have a hollow tree that some skunks sometimes reside in, would hate to cut into that!
Way back, eons ago when I was goofing around logging, we used to cut into squirrels and coons quite often. Sometimes blood, sometimes not. But the worst was when we would find bees! Honey bees, yellow jackets, wasps, etc.
