As you all can tell, I've been a eyeballing that stove for a while now.

My question is, how many pieces of wood (split 4 ways of course...) can you put into that thing?

I know the process: kindling, one or two splits, and then wait for it to get to 250 and turn on cat. Then disengage cat and add the rest.

My question is: how many pieces can that thing hold? without over-firing it?

    Thanks in advance. :D

Oops! I meant Hybrid. Not Hybris. :picard:

Not a big chance of over firing that beast. It is one more thing that makes it great. I'll let others describe how much wood it holds but it will hold a bunch!

I kinda gathered as such.

I'd still like to know what it'll hold though. :D

Oh Machria , Chuck wants to know how much wood your stove holds.
As long as you don't forget you put wood in the stove and set it on fire, and adjust everything well, I highly doubt you'd overfire a modern stove.
    They're VERY controllable.

Well, how big is each round? That would make big difference if one is 12" dia., and another is 24" dia. Jus' sayin'.

I just have this nightmare scenario in my head. Put one too many logs in and end up having to throw a flaming log out the window! :jaw::bug::faint::picard: Like I saw someone else in here talking about, with a Lopi stove. Yeesh, that'd be horrible!

Not trying to bust yer chops Chuck, but yeah.......lots of variables. I think the volume of the box is around 2.75 cu. ft., but you can get that info from the manual. Or, Machria . There's a few others with that stove too. Pretty sure there's at least one thread about the stove as well.

My two neighbors, mom and sister, both have ideal steels in thier homes. I went for the PH myself.
Without a doubt the IS is easier to load and offers more sq footage. The PH can be a little trickier if your looking to stuff it full. After running a Fireview last year I'm used to the side loading methodology.

Only had six fires in the PH so far this year. Burning bone dry punky spalted maple uglies. You won't over fire that stove but the shape of your splits will make a difference as to how much you can stuff in it. Nice straight splits of varying thicknesses seems to be the way to go. The correct length will also be key in getting it chock full.

I think I'm going to be warmer this winter than last. The fireview while a nice stove just couldn't always keep up with demand. IMO the soap stones really shine once you get into the 24/7 burn season. That's when they really show you what they're made of. Nice even heat of a long duration compared to blistering heat and cool off periods of a tin stove.

Last winter when my mom came over to see this strange stone stove her son had bought on Craigslist her comment was. "Well it's warm in here but the stove doesn't feel hot"
I chuckled but she had a point. With the cast iron stove I tried the year before you could tell where the heat was coming from. Hot face, cold back of the neck syndrome. With the soapstone if you closed your eyes you'd be hard pressed to find the source.

Its a 2.8 cu ft stove. It will hold 22" long splits.

You need to guess approximate size of your wood as say log split 4 ways , we dont know the size of the log you split 4 ways.

I would say it will hold 6 splits maybe 7 , 22" long that are approximately and roughly 5" plus or minus an inch diameter even tho your splits are not round.

Thing to consider is your gonna get plenty of burn time and heat out of that stove.

Once you learn it will be easy to get 12 hour burns and just do 2 loads a day.

How large of a house are you heating? How well insulated is it?

I have loaded the Progress with bone dry Cottonwood and never came close to an overfire. The stove can be snuffed down pretty low, even if the secondaries are firing. The amount of wood the stove can fit does not matter as much as how small and dry are the splits.

I loaded and then unloaded the PH to illustrate what it can hold. For reference, the wider floor boards are 4". These splits range from 19-21" in length. This was a cold load (no coals or smoke, plenty of time to re-position pieces). I had it up above the top of the andirons in the front, but with a couple of inches below the top of the firebox. Normally we wouldn't bother to try to stuff it full, but I have put nearly this much in many times. In 20+ cord of burning, we have had the temp up to the 700 degree stove-top only a couple of times, in our first year with the stove.
