So...I ran my dad's 310 earlier in the week. Then I ran my FILs 290 today. Then I ran my BILs 290. They were underwhelming. I know I can't make them run like a pro saw but they need help. What's the best place and size to open these up?
Easiest is to open up the deflector opening and punch a couple holes in the dimple underneath. That's not the quietest but it won't be too awful if you don't get carried away.
Here's my thread to the MS290 muffler mod... With a lot of good information and pictures in it. Muffler Modification? | Firewood Hoarders Club
I like to do mine like this. Using the middle see the most gains. Also open the outer deflector for it too. I open up white areas added and open up existing.
The last one I did was similar with the dimple removed but I did not drill the deflector and I left the screen in. Yeah, it was friggin loud.
How is that mod sound wise? My 029 super is a great, reliable saw, but using my buddy's 460 back to back makes me want more. It just feels bottled up stock.
How noise tolerant are you? Cut the deflector like Cut4Fun's pic shows, remove the dimpled area and slap a screen in it. It will sound awesome. It'll be loud for sure but not as obnoxious as you might think. I know plenty of vintage machines that are worse. Of course it would respond dramatically to just a 3/8 hole drilled dead center too because your feeling is right. These saws are definitely corked up.
If the regular 029 is corked up, the added displacement of the super model probably is basically wasted, if the muffler is the same that is. Noise wise, I love the sound of a nice tuned 2 stroke, so I'm fine with that. I just wouldn't want earplug mandatory noise.
The 029?! Lol, the 390 is the worst offender. Same muffler, just another 20cc..... (Edit: dunno what I was smoking. Only another 10cc from the 029)
