Granddaughter fell asleep finally and Grandmama Bear came into the room and said don't make a noise! I slipped out to the wood shed and picked up the maul and we got a 1/2 cord split and stacked long nap in.

I guess that I been doing it by myself for so long that's all I know. I have a certain way of doing things and wouldn't want anyone in my way slowing me down or maybe getting hurt..

I don't mind working alone, though my wife doesn't care for it in case I would get hurt. So I promise her to leave a cell phone within reach of the splitter, usually wrapped in a shirt or jacket. fIgure I could stagger over to it maybe, try not to run saws alone but when needed do same thing.

We don't get to pick the way we go, but I'm ok going. In the woods when it's my time

I agree Backwoods. Im late to this party but this thread struck a cord with me. I drop and buck 3/4 of my firewood by myself, in the mountains and out of cell range for much of the time. My wife knows roughly where I am but if I was to get in a pickle I guess I would have some issues to deal with. For the real big trees I bring the fam with me but otherwise Im solo. I enjoy the hard work, the zen of it all but I'm aware of the hazards of my own making and the predators out there. I don't condone cutting by yourself or recommend it but it is what it is for me. My grandfather died falling and he was surrounded by friends so at least in his case it didn't make a difference if there was someone there or not.

Usually have my brothers help for any falling or skidding in the woods or work along side my buddy on a tree removal job but when it gets to bucking or splitting and stacking that's me time. The 16-18" wood that comes out to 12-30" wood is a regular mess come stacking time or the 20"+ pieces that all have to be trimmed!!!!:headbang:
