thanks I didn't even think to look at the leaves me and the brother n law where out shooting and I had the saw with me
Yep WV Mountaineer is correct. I've never burned any just some limbs. Always check the ground for leaves or any branch with some hanging if its a dead tree - makes ID easier My southern wood experiment this year is Crepe Myrtle, some decent sized poles from clearing back the powerline
I was kinda thinking holly, but once you get pricked by them leaves, there's very little room for uncertainty.... Plus, holly is "whiter" right WV Mountaineer?
Hackberry bark is ROUGH. That bark in the pic isn't ROUGH. It is SMOOTH and looks like elephant skin. It is a MAGNOLIA. You can take that to the bank from a guy that spends a lot of bank on knowing what species certain trees are. God Bless
No sir... Juvenile bark and limb wood Hackberry can be as smooth as maple.. Look closely at the pimples on the piece to the right.
Smooth grey bark would lead one to think beech, yes.. But remember where the OP lives... And bark can be such a liar... Lol
Some hackberry can sure fool anyone without the leaves. There's a big one on my place that's almost completely smooth on the limbs. And the trunk doesn't look right for it either. But the leaves can't keep the secret.
