Ok well I plan on ordering my liner this week. So figured I would put up my list and see if you guys think I missed anything. 25ft liner with insulation 13x13 top plate Metal sheeting for block off (recommendations on gauge?) Masonry screws Metal blades for sawzall to cut damper or grinding wheels for grinder Hi temp sealant Roxul for block off Thats all I can think of right now. If there is anything that could make it easier, or something I am missing please shout it out. Its a 6inch liner going down a 13×13 clay lined chimney. 316 or 304 stainless not sure of the pros and cons. As always thanks for the input and help.
Just off the top of my head... Appliance connector or tee ? Cardboard for block off plate template. Self tap metal screws Metal snips Pop rivets Jig saw with metal blades. Sealant for the top cover. Patience. I saved some insulation to wrap around the flex liner where it went through the block off plate. It is held up in place by a large metal hose clamp
If your liner is separate (not a kit) you will also need spray adhevise and wire screen. We had 2 people to straighten it out and apply the insulation/screen, could have used more.....
That is a good point. The mesh wrap on mine was loose, a one size fit all type. We skipped the adhesive but used the mesh over the insulation. I also bought some bare steel wire and put a wrap every two feet or so to keep the mesh in place and minimize snagging.
I think I will be getting a kit. But if not your just talking about something to wrap on the outside of the insulation to keep it all together?
I don't see chimney cap. The wire that has been mentioned is a good idea, I did that also with mine. I bought from Rockford and see they have a 10% off deal going on right now. If you can't get a block off plate up in there very easy you can just stuff Roxul in, mine has been just fine....4 th year I think now. Had it on my old stove for 1 or 2 years. I just looked again and see the liner kits come with cap but I preferred the hinged swivel cap.
Not positive but I think the wire mesh is to protect the insulation, not necessarily keep it together. My insulation was fleece batting on the inside with a foil liner on the outside. The foil tears easily. My kit was similar to this, so something to get the liner down the chimney without getting the insulation torn off on the way down. Kinda like super light gauge chicken wire only in 1/2" openings....
Ok so have done some looking around and this is what I think I will be going with. 6" 316 Flexible Chimney Liner Tee Kit or Insert Kit with Optional Insulation Seems to have all I need. The top plate isnt as nice as I would like but for the price I could easily pick one up elsewhere. 316 stainless liner 6"x25ft with insulation appliance connector and top cap for $534.99. Any thoughts or experiences dealing with them, the company is Rockford Chimney Supply.
I am not sure if you have a few inches of terra cotta clay chimney liner above your brick chimney, but I bought the terra cotta cap that has four masonry screws. the cap was sealed to the top of the terra cotta and then screwed in hand-tight. It has been rock solid. It is a well made cap. It is listed under components for round liners. I had the option to pick that one for a slightly higher cost at the time. I have a 13x13 rain cap now that has the screws. I was planning on putting the top plate on, cutting the liner almost flush and then putting my rain cap back over it all.
My experience with them was super, I'd gladly refer anyone to them. If you go directly to there sight they are showing 10% off. Not sure how that compares to their e-bay price you linked in your post. One other thing that I found very helpful that you can purchase from them is what they call a pulling cone I believe. It attaches to the end of the liner with a hose clamp just like your appliance connectors do then you can attach a rope to it and drop it down the chimney to help pull it down if you have any slightly off set tiles, it is very helpful.
Ok another quikc question. Roxul is mineral wool or stone wool correct? If that is the case I can get this and it should hold up to temp correct? A lot cheaper and I'm pretty sure does the same job. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._mini_detail?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ARU9XTG9WELO3
Don't know much about the stuff you show here, but I have quite a bit of Roxul and would be glad to ship you some if you like. Gonna jump off here to mow but just send me a PM if you want to work on that.
On mine, I have a Storm Collar right below the Cap (My cap mounts in my 8" pipe) I guess its to stop wind blown rain from running down the pipe...Idk, it came with the kit..
Wow thanks for the offer Locust Post but I saw this late and already ordered this other stuff. Again thats what makes FHC an awesome place members like you!
No problem, if the other stuff doesn't turn out to be what you want just let me know. I bought a full bat when I did my stove and used the rest for some insulating in the garage but came up short on that so eventually bought another full bat, have over 1/2 of that left.
