to my driveway. Price has gone up, but I finally caught the guy at home. He first delivered wood to us back in '07. I've stopped by his place about 3 times, and not had any luck, and I lost his card. Luckily, he's only about a mile away. Stopped by today, and he came right out. He didn't recognize me at first, but did after a little hint. Anyway, I asked if I was seeing Ash in his stacks, and he said "yes, burns great right now". $60/face if I pick it up, or $70 delivered. I might just go over with the trailer, so all I need to do is bring it home and take it out to the stacks. No pics, cause it hasn't happened yet. I'm a little stoked about this. I've never burned Ash, and keep saying I'd like to. Now, I can.
Ash is good burning wood Dave. Not as high on the BTU scale as a real dense hardwood, but it dries fast and throws good heat. I use it exclusively and mix it with White Pine because those are what are on my property. Works great. How many cord you buying?
Burns hot and fast. Makes a decent coal but in the dead of winter it doesn't heat all night, at least in this area. Does burn pretty clean though, not a lot of ashes to deal with.
I agree Gas. It does not burn quite as long as oak but does really well and we've heated 100% with ash many winters and got along just fine.
I never had a lot of ash wood until that last several years but I really like the way it off gases and burns in the cat stove. One of my favorites now along with elm.
No experience with ash but I've heard a lot of good things about it. As for a winter wood, first winter I was where I am now all I did was burn hemlock and pine, in comparison ash is excellent firewood.
Dollars to donuts, you're going to like it in that NC30. We find white ash pretty close to dry red oak.
I'm starting with 2/3 cord, then probably another 2/3 next month. I'd like to get 3 full before the snow gets too deep, but we'll see. It'll really help get me back on track if I can use it instead of Oak. Even a little. I stopped in front of his stacks on the way out of the yard, and they for sure weren't 1/3 cord. He delivered true 1/3 loads before. He's a one man show and been at it for a long time.
I say this because of the size differences I have seen in stoves. From the smallest to the biggest is quite a difference. My gasification boiler has over 6 cu.ft. in the burn chamber for a nice long overnight burn with Ash.
Several stacks, and I was looking at the end stack......looked a little short to me. He said he and a friend were going to start reshingling his roof today, so it may be a few days before he delivers, unless I take the trailer over. I don't want to interrupt his roofing project though. I'll keep css, but I can calm down/slow down a little knowing this is coming. I have next year's Oak, and maybe 1/2 cord of Pine for next year.........I need about 3 more cord of Maple or Ash, or something decent, then I'll start work on '17-'18 stuff.
He's been at it a long time, then he should make certain you get what you pay for and not short change you.
I'm hoping for some time next week. I'm almost done filling the shed, so I'll have time to deal with the Ash then. Bingo! He gave us the real deal last time, so I think we're good. I will check though. Always do. He needs to have his truck fixed first......one gas tank strap is broken. He did tell me this batch was split and stacked back in April.
