One nice thing about this hot muggy weather we've had the past week or so - it's provided me a veritable bounty of Armillaria tabescens - Ringless Honey Mushroom! I could probably fill a paper grocery bag with them in 10 minutes.

Of course I'm obliged to mention that eating wild mushrooms can be a dangerous activity - if you're not extremely careful, you could end up on a trip to the hospital, the morgue, or some other place in the universe. Familiarize yourself with the varieties in your area and always consult an expert if you're not sure.

Any other hunters out there? What have you been finding? :binoculars:

Found some chicken mushroom roosting high in this huge tree. They were in the rotted crotch just above the limbs by the ladder.

I am a morel mushroom hunter in the spring here in Minnesota. I know that there are fall mushrooms but I need to have someone teach me what to look for in the northwoods. I grew up in Illinois and my uncle used to pick mushrooms in the fall of the year. But, I have not been able to see the same type of mushrooms here in Minnesota in the fall.
I should check with the University Extension Service to see if they offer some type of training for fall mushrooms in the northwoods.

Puff balls are good but have to be pure white and firm. Always be 110% of any mushroom before you eat it and never eat them raw. Any new mushroom once known to be edible should still be eaten in a small quantity first to see if you have any ill effects many people get sick from morels while others eat them by the bucket full .

interesting what you say about morels. I have never heard of anyone getting sick on them? I know some don't like the taste or texture but poison, huh!
i am going to look into that. Thanks for the info.

I never heard of getting sick from morels either, but people can have allergies to anything.

I don't know of anyone personally but have heard of people getting mild stomach and intesting distress. From what I understand all mushrooms have toxins it's just some don't affect everyone. I guess it's like he's stings, peanuts, shellfish and so on.. Also want to add I'm no expert just a friend and I read allot and hunt allot.

I saw a 25 year guy eat his first morel and one of his ears swelled up to three times the normal size. (Sorry no pics, you should have seen it) Obviously we said no more morels for you. However, since then he has eaten them and had no problems. So you always have to be careful.

On my walk to school, I found these. I think they are Shaggy Manes.

Morels are very much gooder! The dose makes the poison; after eating a walmart sack full of morels dipped in egg milk mixture and rolled in flour and fried in olive/peanut oil Crisco or lard if that's all you have. I've never had any lasting adverse effects but it will make a heaping mess of corn bread and beans with left over ham bones, boiled cabbage and fried crappie look like a cake walk and teach you the wisdom of our elders when they say never, ever, trust a ....!

P.S. If anyone needs to get rid of 5,10,15 pounds of morels I would be willing to sacrafice myself for the good of the FHC family!
