Well school started 2 weeks ago and I been saying I got about 12 cord in different stages of CSS, so pics or it didn't happen. So, there has got to be a story. Here it is.

3 weeks ago when it was 90 I was out :axe: some more storm damage worrying that I did not have enough firewood. Contemplating ìf i was gonna have to buy some 9 month seasoned wood from my loggers. Then thinking ok but my taxes are due October 15 :hair:

    20150910_171102.jpg
my neighbor who got about 800 acres comes up on his gator and we start a chatting and he asks me if I got enough! Being a true hoarder I say Never! I went through 14 cord last year. Him being a Vermont farmer, who are known for deep conversations that include "ayup" as 20 percent of a 10 minute talk says hop in for a ride..

Within 500 yards of my processing area he shows me 3, 42 inch minimum 12 foot ash logs that are down. probably been down for 3 years not blocked or split. Thought they might be punky but not so much..
    20150910_165745.jpg

this is the first one. Brother and dad had taken my saws to dad's camp to clean up from storm damage so I grabbed old Husky 340? and started blocking. then cousin showed up and he had an old 044 so we went to town 20150910_170521.jpg

    and then kept going
    20150910_170758.jpg

and going.. Backwoods Savage said don't noodle.. pretty hard with only 16 inch bars but I grabbed my gramps 30 inch 15 lb
old wedge (pic later) and they quartered pretty easy.

Also same size pine so pulled out moisture meter in new quarters they are between 18 and 22%

 After 2 days playing on it almost ready to :tree: over to processing area

I figure if main logs are 40 inches diameter by 12 feet length average the 3 logs gotta equal 5 cord css. plus another cord in pine plus 6ish in popular apple and sugar maple. that's being finished this weekend. I might be ok:handshake:

    Time for a

42' ash-- that be some big ash, right there. That'll make some sweet farwood.

Biggest end I think was 52 inch. Oh so glad cousin stopped by with 044 and 24 inch bar. mostly blocked now.. still a couple too big for 24 bar but a 8 pound sledgehammer and gramps wedge break them up with a little sweat equity:rofl:  yeah the we're on edge of a hidden field. loggers took branches and process into farwood, but logs too big soo.. :saw:

Did you use 14 cord to heat your home, or ????
That's a lot of wood, Good that you were able to get some so close and for the right price!

Really I didn't ask.. He said he didn't so I figured I shouldn't. Anyway reason for noodling is to make big blocks smaller to lift. I got the wedge for that. Pic in daylight.

Yeah if you count everything. probably a little conservative. in a 2 cubic foot firebox NC-13. I am still learning
like this evening I learned . draft was measured in pascals I forgot the numbers but if good draft is 12 I got 48 pascals. measured in stove. That's a top vent 90 to thru wall connection on 6 inch duravent. so most of that probably went up chimney:hair:

14 cord through a 13, ( cord is 4ft x 4ft x 8ft) in one season? the 13 must have been lit up like the red light district of New Orleans back in the day. Unless you meant face-rick-1/3 cord = 128/3=42.6cf with what ever external dimensions. I have seen that confusion banterd about quite often. I have a NC30 , 5 full (128cf) cords is about max for my area of mixed hard woods ( apx Silver maple on the low side on up the density scale.) and that is 24/7 burns filled once in morning and then tended for a bit in evening before adding over night load. Roughly from Oct to April with some chill chasing in Sept and May( that has gone as far a July once or twice.)

Theres nine ways to kill a cat. Theres really no reason not to noodle a big log when you have the firepower. If your undergunned then no your not going to enjoy noodling....

Chris I understand it does not seem right I said it too.. I said it too. I mean full cords. I started a joke in March I went thru 12 of these Vermont face cords which is the face of a full cord. that measured 7 feet tall 16 feet wide 18 inches and most of my wood was sugar maple.
    20150322_152026.jpg
I added a second damper in march. til then full loaded to out was max of 3.5 h Out means no coals match restart. First fire was 1 year ago today and small ones in June.

Yeah, I'm under gunned, I think my 70 cc saw will be my Christmas present to myself. Nobody around me rents 70 cc only 50cc:headbang: I got 3 of those. leaning towards stihl. only because the echo and dolmar in 70 cc are about my price of a 461. From what I seen on CL, used you can almost recoup your money if you hate it..

Backwoods Savage said he didn't noodle that's why I don't ... plus it's faster for me just to smack it with a wedge .... really wanted to put saw down after blocking those big boys anyway:eek:

Man that's a lot for one season ( roughly 1.3 cord per your dimensions x 12) particularly in that small box. More like using a open fireplace for heat.

I hear you in February slept in recliner next to stove.. got up every 2 hours. read a lot of FHC, ordered new woodstove. etc!

The front one got shorter so I averaged down to 14 cord to be conservative.

So why did Backwoods Savage say don't noodle. Sorry folks but I think that is the lazy man's way out. A waste of gas, oil and wear and tear on the saw and chain. Besides, these chains are not ground for ripping so you are using it contrary.

In this case, those are some big ash trees that have been down for years. One could probably split them using a single bit ax if he wanted to. Even if you have to use sledge and wedge, it most times will take less time to split that way than to "noodle." But don't let me stop those who want to do it. I just don't or at least I have yet to do one that way. So, after 50+ years of doing this and no problems, I still don't see any sense in noodling. But each to their own.

Border man, that is a great find. I hope you gave your farmer friend a little something for this. Sounds like a nice guy.

Oh, ok , split the difference start a slot with the saw to put the wedge in. That should please both sides of fence.:D
Beside those noodles make some nice starters, for those of us that let it go out every so often. Then there are those few species that are the stringy and refuse to co-operate with wedges or double bits:hair: so revenge:saw: is sweet.

Yeah quartered real easy. it took less than 20 minutes quarter rounds in log. Didn't mean to put ya in middle. I like to learn from older and wiser. I don't have time left to make all mistakes myself. Don't do much for farmer but I brush hog trail that adjoin our properties because his wife and grandchildren need trails to get to the black berry bushes. As farmer he's too busy. Soon I make his wife smile and I clean garbage and trash out of the woods. in short were neighborly and it's good:handshake:
