Whether you're working on a vehicle or equipment or processing wood and you need to stop at a store or gas station, you're not looking your best for sure, have you gotten the look from other people?
I have and I wonder exactly what they are thinking, and what would happen if I actually spoke to them.
Y'all know what I mean?

I'm sure I have, but I don't give a rat's patootie what others think about what I look like, most of the time.
If I'm going "shopping" (which is a once or twice a month thing), I clean up ok, and put on clean clothes.
Otherwise, take me as I am, cause that's all that I am. That's almost a direct quote from Popeye.:dex:

Long time ago, we were going to buy our first new car and I stopped by the dealership after digging in the ground... I was covered with dirt. When I walked in I got the "look", and all of the A team sales guys walked off. A new young rookie came over, we sat down and talked. Went back a week later with my honey and made sure I asked the A team guys where the rookie was, sat down with him and bought a new Chevy S-10 Blazer. Kinda fun...

Small town and a lot of unsnobby folks here, so it's easy to have that attitude.
    I like it.
Except some downstaters and Canada Creek Ranch folks who think their poo doesn't stink.
Big hug, yeah, that's it. A BIG hug.
I learned a long time ago not to judge people too much by looks. I worked with a lot of different folks from a lot of different backgrounds and education levels doing the same work. I met my wife there, and she has a college deg.
Lots of 'em did, but couldn't get work doing what they went to school for or couldn't make any money doing it. Kinda evens out the field a bit.

I know you have run across many of them people living in the Detroit area most of your life.
I like where I am but, I would like to be further out in the country, I just don't have enough energy to pull up stakes and MOVE :hair:

When I see a dirty looking person in the situation you mentioned, I think, now there is a working person who is supports him or her self and many others. That person has my respect. I know what it is to be covered with dirt, sweat, and also itch. Like so many others here, I really don't care about the looks I might get. I don't have time to waste on what I look like to others. My boys are the same way. My girls try a lot harder to be presentable. I am much more likely to give a "look" for the way someone is acting, or acting out including potty mouth around kids.

I like to be the double take kinda guy. :binoculars:

I'll pull up to the store in my Audi, get out and have dirty clothes, hair, face etc after working all day outside ( when I do work outside, that is. I'm a weekend warrior, as I work at a desk in an office).

A friend of mine learned this quick in the electronics business. A big ugly logger came in after work and all the other sales guys ran to the back laughing. So he goes over, helps the guy pick out a high end entertainment system with all the latest equipment. Guy says, can you get me five of these? Yea , sure, can have them tomorrow on the truck. Guy pulled out a wad of cash and paid. Christmas gifts for his five kids.

We intentionally dress shabby when we go to buy a car or any other high dollar item. The snooty female furniture store sales people are really funny to watch when we're all hillbillied up. They won't get within 5 ft of us, for fear that something might jump off us onto them. Makes it so much easier to weed out the dirtbags and buy from someone we're comfortable with.

I get the look almost every day going from my full time day job as a mechanic to my business at home as a mechanic. Doesn't bother me though because I know the ones looking at me like that don't have the ability to do anything for themselves. And besides, I see the dirt under our nails (all of us working folk) and scars as more of a badge of honor than anything else.

Cant say as I ever have got the " look". Guess I don't pay attention .
About 9 months out of the year I work 7 days a week so I'm always dirty.
Actually started building a solar bathhouse so I can cleanup outside and not track chit into the house. Almost done with it.
Had a run in with a guy at a restaurant a couple years ago as I was coming off an in field service call. I was pretty dirty and he made a comment. He works in a union shop and has always been an arrogant prix. I apologized to him for not being a union suck so that my work clothes would stay clean. He shut up.

I live in an area that's full of mechanic's, farmers, landscapers, and general labor folks. I'd have to be REALLY, REALLY dirty to get that "look", as it's pretty common to go the the local gas station or auto parts store looking like you bathed in a tub of grease!

I'm a desk jockey but certainly enjoy my weekend warrior outings that leave me covered in dirt, grease, diesel, oil, etc.

A certain someone once told a tale of how he was seated next to someone he didn't know at a wedding, guy was a mechanic, about all he knew. Proceeded to tell about how that mechanic... he couldn't even clean up his hands, they were all dirty under the fingernails. I perked up and asked if he'd ever turned a wrench before and how long it took him to get the grease out from under his nails.

I've gotten the look plenty of times. I don't really pay any mind to it but my wife has pointed it out. I make it a point to tell my kids not to judge someone by the way they look.

I used to work with a dump truck driver that I would venture to say had a net worth well north of a million. To look at him you'd never know, but he worked hard all his life for everything he had.
