It has been a very frustrating day for me. Way back in 2004 I had my first hip replacement. I'll not forget; it went great. Surgery on July 8. On September 1 I used a hand planter and planted a bunch of oats. Took about 4 or 5 hours to finish. No crutches, no cane, no problems. The next day I was out climbing trees setting tree stands for the coming hunting season. This year I had a hip revision on June 22. Sadly, things have not gone well. I'm still using crutches and still have a lot of pain. Called the doctor today to see if we could move the next appointment up and hopefully get some cortisone shot into it. No dice, at least for now. Minimum of 12 weeks after surgery before that can be done and that should fit with my next appointment. In the meantime, I have to deal with the pain and still take medication. Crazy. In fact, they are calling in another medication they think might help. Hopefully I won't be in la la land too much. I have been ordered to take it very easy the next 2 week. No work. Right.... I did take it easy for 2 days but this morning I had to do something. I hooked the trailer onto the atv and planned on moving some galvanized roofing roofing and short logs back to the wood pile and if I felt okay once I got those back there, I'd start some stacking. It was not to be. I got one piece of galvanized onto the trailer and had to stop because of pain in both hip and back. Okay. I give up. Unhooked the trailer and was going to get on the atv and put it back in the barn. Whoops! Seems the atv was covered with yellow jackets! I don't know about you, but I won't argue with those things. The atv stayed put and I walked to the house and took it easy. Wife was out there this afternoon and planned on bringing the atv up to the barn. Nothing doing. So I went out and got onto the atv and really almost flew out of there. I figured they could not outrun or outfly the atv and it worked. No stings. We found that I had run over a hole that held the buggers so tonight after dark we'll give them a drink of some very hot water; like boiling. That will fix them. But, back to the hip. I'm about at wits end with this thing. Practically nothing has got done around here since late June and it really is looking like it too. But, guess it is what it is. Sorry about the rant.
Must be really frustrating. It would drive me crazy too Im sure. Keep thinking about the long term benefits once it's healed. Take care man.
I wish you the very best Dennis. I hope all goes well. Take it easy. I know it is difficult to do, but sometimes you have to, in order to let the body recoup. Prayers. Some reading. Sleep. Eat well. Some reading. Rest. Repeat.
Hang in there Dennis and remember it takes " longer to heal " when we are older....Here is hoping you start feeling less pain soon....
Like you said Dennis, it is what it is....You made your best effort to do what you know and it got the best of you. Can't fight nature on this one. When the time is right you will be repaired and hopefully out of pain too. Then we can see you getting back at it again. I'm almost sure the Dr. will put some serious restrictions on your activities after the next one. Listen to him.
One thing's for sure (besides the difficulty of your current condition), if you were closer, I'd bring my bad back over there and work up whatever needed done that has been on hold, and I know a bunch of fellows and fellas who would jump right in!!! Dang, if you didn't live umpteen hours away, Backwoods Savage Rest up, Oh Knowledgeable One- we need ya here!
I think everyone is rooting for you and wishing they lived closer. It would probably drive you crazy with everyone doing everything differently. Patience is a virtue they say but it is hard to remember that when you are in pain and want to get things done!
Very sorry this time around is not going well Dennis. You're one of the busiest guys on the forum so it's gonna be hard as hell to stop motion. Looks as tho you're just going to have to. But keeping you from bulling your way thru the healing time ahead will be impossible for anyone assigned to that job, including Judy. The only one who can make that happen is you. If your doc says absolutely no work, nothing... it might be time to put it all aside and let your body heal. All that other stuff will get done by others or will wait until you are 100%. Just not that important in the scheme of things. We all want you to heal up...
I wish you the best also. If it makes you feel better to hear this then maybe this is why it happened to me. On April 3, I was hit head on in my pickup. I suffered a compound fracture of my fibula and tibia, a cracked hip socket and fractured femur, and broke my ankle in 2 places. After 14 days in hospital, 3 surgeries, and ongoing physical therapy, I still am trying to stack another piece of wood. Sure it is tough. Real tough, with all the worries of getting better, paying the bills, etc. but just keep your head up toward the heavens, thank God for another day above ground, and heal. The rest will take care of itself.
Well maybe this hip repair job will last a long time with no problems if you can make it thru the re-hab process "SAFELY" Stay on course for a bit longer. It'll all be worth it & you'll get to all the work in a few months. The alternative is you mess it up & wait longer to heal up or it don't heal proper Tough to do, but not much choice. Sit on the ATV & drink beer ! (not over a wasp nest though) Hang in there, lots here understand , you're a "doer" & want to be doing stuff. Maybe some a couple glasses of wine will slow you down, when you get all worked up to go do something.
sorry to hear this,i hope things improve for you soon, the frustration of not being able to do anything must be awful ,but time will help, please take care we are all thinking of you.
Im not sure if I told you before Dennis but my Uncle is having hip replacement problems. He had a replacement and the pain never went away. Turned out its infected and he needs to get it removed and replaced again. Not trying to scare you but show you it could be worse. I know youll keep diggin. Take care.
Sorry for the late reply, did not see this post until this morning. Hope you are a little better today, but I bet not by much! You know, I always thought I would slow down when I got older--just like you, it seems I am busier than ever! And there is always that cloud of urgency that hangs above, like if I don't get this done, I might not be able to do it tomorrow. Things have a tendency to pile up and jobs start to multiply. Then my body rebels. But I am a tough old codger (codgeress?), so I ain't-a gonna give up. Dennis, I think those yellowjackets were sent by your Higher Power to show you what you are supposed to be doing right now. Take a deep breath, and suck it up. What is the WORSE thing that can happen if you don't get those chores done? I think you health needs to take precedence, because all future industry depends upon it. Take care, my friend! I am pulling for you. P.S. I am in the middle of a major basement spruce up that is playing havoc with my tendonitis, so I understand. And it is hard to pace myself!!
I've had one in for 11 years already. Yes, they can be good for much longer than that. This just happened to be one of the Stryker hips where the metal was going bad and metal was getting into my blood. That can screw up the vital organs quickly. Hence, it had to come out quickly.
A bit better day today. Sorry I was so frustrated and I should not have ranted but it is done. So we went for a drive this afternoon. Too much like a sauna outdoors to want to do much anyway. Was good to just spend some time with my wife and we saw some country we hadn't seen for a while. Tomorrow will be another day. We'll get through it. Thanks everyone.
Hang in there Dennis, you don't want to make things worse, take it easy and if you want some help just shout!!
For those who have or are there, you know this all too well. For those who are not there or have not experienced this situation, it is a hell to live in. Being in pain and dependent, without any control, is overwhelming. You know there is light at the end of that tunnel. Its the ride there that's the problem. Hang in there Dennis.
