Had a 4 & 1/8 inch wheel I believe. Was too big for.my 290 chain. .325 pitch. Thought I was gonna bust the wheel. What size to use?
3/8 pitch chain has more space between the raker and.cutter. much easier

Was a brand new wheel but it might be too wide. Narrower than the wheel I use for.my 441 chain. Hadn't used the 290 in months. Fired right up. Well made saw for what it is.

What settings did you set on your grinder for that chain?

30.degrees. one side was fine. Other side wheel doesn't fit between raker and cutter

is there a narrower wheel? the gap with a .325 pitch chain isn't much. the gap with a 3/8 is huge.

i have to sharpen chains on my kombi pole saw and 192 chains. those are going to be impossible with a grinder unless i figure out the right wheel for the bigger saw first.

how are others doing this with a bench grinder?

1/8 th inch is the correct wheel thickness for .325 chain . I'm guessing that your grinder has a fixed head angle ,and the only adjustment is on the chain holder . If so , you are going to have to adjust the wheel to clear the raker and take a bit more of the cutter than you might like . Go slow .... Either that,or hand file until the gap opens up after a couple of shapening sessions .

There are wheels available in 2.5mm, 2mm or 3/32- 1.25" arbor so an adapter for the arbor would be needed. Resonoid ( brown color) based would be best as the other type ( which are pink) would be too hard a wheel for use on chain teeth. These are 150mm diameter (about 5.875") used primary for sharpening cold saws.

my friend has a .290 and a heavy duty all metal bodied grinder from the 70's with a clockwise / counter clockwise directional option. i'm going to check with him on how he does it. one side was totally fine. the other side i couldn't do at all without the wheel bouncing off the chain. got to be careful with that. good way to shatter a wheel.

If your current wheel fit one way and not the other the scale might be off a bit. They are only rough indicators.

As Chris said ,this could be your problem with the wheel hitting the raker on one side but not the other . The chain holder could be offset one way in relation to the wheel center one way ,or the angle indicator is not quite accurate ,or even both . That will throw off where the wheel engages the cutter . Try doing one side ,then readjusting everything for the other side to clear the raker and get the angle you want . Kind of a PIA , but you'll know what adjustments to make in future .
