I'm sure your all sick of the big oak pictures but thought you might find these two interesting ,all these pieces are from one round about 40'' in diameter
I split about 2 cords of big red oak rounds last winter and it was really fun. Seeing those pictures makes me want to get another load. Some people hate the smell, but I like it and also like how nice it is to split. Perhaps I'll call the tree service guy tomorrow ....
Another likeable thing about splits from big rounds is that that very few have bark on 'em. Split sides of bare wood can dry faster than bark covered IMHO. So for oak it only takes 9 years to dry instead of 10. Heheh.
Yup, can't agree more. Big wood makes a lot of firewood without having to deal with small arm wood. The one in the center was about 5' long and weighed probably close to 2000#'s.
Bigger rounds take more effort (especially with an axe & wedge) but are worth it. I love the square-ish splits for stabilizing stacks as opposed to the cut-pie shaped splits. You'll burn for this!
