Good advice, I do have a good extinguisher that I keep near by, but the alarms I will need to pick up.
The ideal is whatever the stove maker tested for, but a foot away for the stove is probably more than that. Pics can be deceiving. Looked a lot closer than that to me. Here's a copy of the manual for the stove. Take a look at page 7 for clearance to combustible info............

Welcome. Great start on the wood stacks. The thing with the vent is in most states its against code to vent from one area to another as it becomes a torch/chimney if a fire should break out. My dad had a sst hood with duct work over his stove in the basement to move the heat around the house. Nothing ever happened but think how fast smoke and fire would spread with that setup. :-(

Pretty surprised the Ins. Co. let that go. So, way up there in the nether regions of Mi., when do you think it'll be chilly enough for a fire? I came real close to crankin' up a small one yesterday, even though our normal "season" doesn't start for at least another 3 weeks or more.
Yep. I got gooder advice from my brother when we first started burning. He told me to expect about 5 full cords burned all winter. That's been almost dead on every year since then. I now try to have that and a little more for winters like we've had the last 2 years.
Welcome Keweenaw! You will find the people here very nice and helpful. +1 on dry wood - probably the single best piece of advice you can get. Get far enough ahead so you are certain your wood is dry. Personally, I'm working on a 5 year plan as the majority of my wood is oak and it is very slow drying. I can't even imagine how you handle all this snow. We will all want to see some winter pictures!
The last couple days have been in the 50's and rainy, if this keeps up it will be soon that I start on the shoulder wood. I worry that if I have to start before September that I will be out in the real cold months cutting anything remotely dry just to make it through.
Haha yeah the snow up here gets pretty serious, we normally have three or four feet on the ground by the end of December and then it holds there through April. It all really depends on how quickly the lake freezes. If sooner than later then we get less snow than if the lake stayed open longer. I will definitely get some pics up when it gets here. Last year we had a foot on the ground for opening day of rifle season nov. 15
