I bought a faded SG a few years ago for the same reason, to reach higher on the neck. I put some nice gibson pickups in it and it sounds pretty good, I just can't like that guitar though. There's just something about the feel of it that I can't get used to. I learned to play on acoustic and played on one for over 10 years before I got an electric. I was ham-fisted on that electric for a long time before I was finally able to relax. Don't give up on electric just because one doesn't feel right. Try some other ones out, like maybe a tele or a strat, or whatever feels good. The thing that sucks for me is that it's not easy to sit in a music store and get the feel of a guitar. I'm pretty sure my next guitar will be a tele, just not sure what type.
Looks like you have a captive audience there. My amp resides in the spare bedroom and points towards the hall. I use a wireless and play in the living room. It's just too loud to be in the same room with it, and you know it's gotta be loud to sound good.
yep. It's loud. It starts getting the break up i want around 4 in the pre and 3 in the post. That's loud enough to play a small club unmic'ed I want to get a 2x12 which should cut the output by 3dB
I never got along with the SG shape. i had an epi version of it as a teen. too 'nose heavy' with a strap, and neck dives annoy me. the 'super strat' body will always be my favorite. I had a LP studio for many years too. It's just too dang heavy. playing for 2 hours straight and you feel like a hunch back. While easily changed out, I hate the stock pick ups the most. 490T i think.. awfully bright and horrible for a high gain amp I can't play with 9-42s on an electric either. even 10-46 are to touchy for anything but very touch-sensitive pink floyd stuff. The scale of the guitar matters too. 11-52's on a gibson 24.25" scale will have similar tension to 10-46's on a 25.5" scale strat/just about everything else ever made.... I usually ran 12's or 13's in Eb standard on 25.5 but geeze. ,i haven't had a guitar in normal tuning in a real long time. most of my 6 string are in C or drop C and run 13-60/63
My amps are only 18 watts through a 1x12, but I can't be in the same room with them if the volume is above 3 and the gain at half. They're not high gain amps though, pretty much just marshall clones.
im at 120 watts :X but halving it only cuts decibels by 3. so if it's 100 db at 120 watts (and i'm sure it's WAYYY louder than that) its 97 at 60, 94 at 30, 91 at 15 watts. So even with a low wattage it's still capable of being loud. A stroke of wonderful luck. Last Friday I did a job for a regular client. I've been doing it every year for 18 years near the end of July. This time he was at the end of the day and we got talking. He had bought a guitar for his grandson back in '08. He play with it a little for the first year and put it away. He joined the Air Force in '12 and told "Pappy", my client, to do whatever he wanted with it because he lost interest. Pappy didn't even know what make it was so I asked if I could have a look at it. Pertinent little tid-bit here; Pappy worked in the financial services field for Merrill-Lynch and money is no object for anything he wants. So he pulls this guitar out of the closet and the first thing I notice is the Martin logo on the case. I'm now grinning from ear to ear; in my mind. I open it up and there lays a lovely Dreadnaught; with a cutaway! There wasn't a mark on it but the action was pretty high. So of course I asked him what he might like to have for it. "Make me an offer" he says. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. "Would you trade it for today's work?" (3.5 hours of my time) "That seems fair" he says. So instead of him writing me a check, I put 2007 Martin DC 1E in my truck. On my way home I stopped in to see my favorite guitar tech and asked him to lower the action and put new strings on it. He called me today to tell me it was ready. Turns out, for some reason, somebody had put a shim under the saddle. This thing plays like a dream now. I am a happy camper!
Not quite. I did a little searching and in the used market, this model is going for $700-$900. What kills me is that it's been sitting in a closet, unused for 7 years. I could have been playing it earlier if I had known. It still looks brand new.

I just snagged this bc rich from mf the other day. It was the stupid deal of the day mark down from 399 to 150. Plays pretty dang good for a cheap price. Being an ae, it doesn't have the volume I had hoped for but it sounds nice. I plugged it in to the 6505+ and had a laugh. NOT an acoustic amp. Haha
I play guitar and drums and make my own instruments in my shop. Here's a couple solidbody electric blanks out of Yellow Poplar I roughed out this afternoon. I think you can make anything you want out of wood if you want to bad enough. You guys like my tongue and groove kitchen floor and laminated door jams/casing and baseboard? All made in my shop from rough sawn White Oak out of the kiln...
