You should at least get yourself another saw. A MS 170 would be a good second saw for you. They work good for limbing trees, cutting brush, and trimming trees. Best of all they are like $180 new and can be bought used for $100. Then after you get a MS 170 you will need a saw bigger than you 029, something in the 70cc range:saw:

I like a good "three saw" plan.

In fact, I like them so much I have five such plans.......LOL!

I started with a McCulloch 3816(1998), then upgraded to a Poulan 2900(2000) then upgraded again to a MS 390(2001). Those were the last saws I bought brand new.
I discovered internet chainsaw enabler groups in 2011 and have owned in the neighborhood of 50 saws since then. Many have gone down the road, but I am currently maintaining 15 saws from 33cc's up to 98cc's. I usually take 3 or 4 saws with me when cutting depending on the work to be done. If it's a yard tree, the the Husqvarna Pole Saw comes along.

The 372 is the saw that really opened my eyes to serious firewood production. They are phenomenal tools.
Still one of my all time favorite saws.
If a man can't cut a truckload of rounds in 15 minutes with a 372...
    His chain is dull..
    LOL..

I only own 1 saw. I'd like to get to a 3 saw plan: 241, 362, 661. Too many things contending for dollars right now though, so the 362 it is.

I got 7 saws, there in my signature.. They cover about all my wood cutting, I am going to by a top handle Stihl here in the near future, trying to find a new/used 200T.

Short answer? You should buy at least another one saw, what happens when your one and only is pinched, in for repair or acting up?

    I
Completely agreed on the 372xp. My dad gave me his after watching me struggle with my 454, cutting firewood is fun again! Even with the saw being almost 20 years old 12of which were professional logging years and to my knowledge it's yet to be completely rebuilt. That saw still holds is own to anything my buddies have, with the exception of maybe the 660

You could run that 029 if you keep fresh gas in it and tuned and a clean air filter that saw may last a lifetime. An easy 39 years with correct fuel mix also....and I would use a bit more oil than the 50:1 stihl says now

I have as many saws as I want right now. For me that is an old Stihl 026 and an almost new Husqvarna 555. The 555 will do anything I typically would use a saw for and the 026 will let me retrieve it if I get it pinched in a log. I do not have big wood to cut and the 555 has no trouble lopping off small branches although it can do much more with its 20 inch bar.

I used a one saw plan for about 20 years. I now have several saws and enjoy taking more than one to work with . If you do most of your cutting off of a delivered wood pile you could find a good used saw for sale on the forum here that would not be as expensive as new and give you a good backup saw or make your 290 a backup saw.

True, I picked up a 290 Farm boss from a flea market for $125 bucks. The person said it would run about 30 seconds and quit. Took it home, pulled the carb off, cleaned the gunk out if it, "old gas" back together and ran "GREAT" Thats what happens when people don't store them properly. You can find some great deals out there.

Sounds too much like my story, except I didn't stop at 2. I'm up to 9 saws I think.

Looks like I'm going to be staying in the 2.9% group. Stihl service techs tell me my 029 is in great shape and only needed a bit of cleaning and a new air filter. Thought long and hard about getting a second saw and came to the conclusion that I am CAD resistant. I may buy a second bar for the 029 and take it to the woods in the event I pinch a saw; a simple bar/chain swap and cutout would be cheaper than a new saw. Thanks again everyone for your thoughts. Here are a couple pictures of the old gal:

Yea but thats too practical and not as much fun :)

Its really hard to wear out a saw. The average firewood cutter just won't do it. With regular maintence and good fuel and correct oil ratio and quality oil it will last virtually forever.
