Right Dave, that is hoar frost. We get lots of it here. The mornings can be really pretty and great for pictures but that type of cold will get to your bones quickly.

Great pics as usual Dave, I always enjoy them. How bad are the squeeters in the warmer months? Been watching the Life Below Zero show and they look unbearable.

Like anywhere, depends on where you are.
    Not bad around here.
I mean there's mosquitoes, but nothing like out in some places in the bush.
I've been in places they can carry you away, & places I see very few.
Out in the tundra, muskeg, where they can bred in the wet swampy ground, lots of them.

ANWAR is mostly a swap for mosquitoes, no people, caribou or trees, mosquitoes ate them all . LOL

Better mosquitoes than snakes & ticks, IMO :)

    PS: no mosquitoes now LOL
     -10°f

I was watching AK The Last Frontier and they mentioned 30+ kinds of mosquitos but they're gone after 6 or 8 weeks. That's not too horrible. I'm surprised they survive the cold winter and the eggs don't freeze permanently.

Those pictures are exceptional. I am glad you are willing to share them with us. I might be able to visit Alaska in the dead of summer, but not when you have -30F and 5 hrs of very dim daylight. I would have to double up on my happy pills. Maine can be a harsh place to live also if you are no accustomed to it. The young folks enjoy the winter sports. At least the snowmobile dealer, just a quarter mile from here, will have a better chance of having a half decent income this winter. I have seen it in recent years where there never was any good snow for most sports. This year won't be like that. Just down the road, about a mile, there is a place where they have smelt shacks. I am sure just a soon as there is enough ice, they will be full. Lots of beer flowing when that happens, smelts or no smelts.

I recall that happening here for three weeks, but that is an exception.

Up to -4°f & started dropping , now -5° , just starting to drop.

Front coming from the SW, hope it's strong enough to push some of this cold air East to the Yukon & BC
Means snow, but that's fine with me. Got cloudy around 1 PM, so maybe it'll make it.

I can't stand that squeaky snow, it's like nails on a chalkboard for me. I end up shuffling my feet to avoid the sound ...uggh I'm gettin' chills just thinking of it.
