Today I pulled the muffler off of my Poulan PP5020av, and found it was an empty can. I expected baffles inside but there were none. But I do have a question - what is the screen for? I imagine it is a spark arrestor, is that right? Does removing it help improve breathing (significantly)? Greg
I will add that you cannot cut wood on any BLM or national forest land without a spark arrestor in the muffler. If you cut on private land only then you can do as you like. I myself like to open the muffler some but keep the spark arrestor in place.
It also keeps debris from sucking back in. Or blowing in if in the back of your truck or your son filling it up or dirt daubers out. Thats said I pull mine out as well.
