ok, I was trained different. deciduous trees came in hard and soft all rest were pine. white birch red maple were soft.... yellow birch sugar maple hard etc... but hey these guys gramps, uncles and dad never burned pine in house... still learning.
Hardwood = deciduous. Softwood is all those trees that never drop their leaves, but don't lose track of the real world fact that some softwoods are harder than some hardwoods. That's right. Some hardwoods are softer than some softwoods. If you are building furniture, you really don't care much about the official designation. Instead you care about how hard the wood really is. It is much the same for firewood cutters. Do you care about the arbitrary designation or about how many BTUs you can expect from seasoned wood?
I go by deciduous or evergreen. Then hard or soft deciduous tree. There's no hard evergreen, but larch or tamarack is a deciduous evergreen. Split wood, not your pants.
there is a guy not far from here that had to put fence around his wood stacks and a camera on a tree stand right next to it because so many people were taking his wood. sad
I'm not sure what would possess someone to steal firewood from someone who put in all of the hard work to get it. I would love to catch someone in the act of stealing it, just so I could find out what they were thinking.
you'd probably find that they don't really do much thinking. the ones that he did catch would tell him they had to get change across the street at the zippymart. or they just hadn't put the money in the box yet. (he had a big sign that said to put the money in the box before loading the wood)
People that would steal the wood are just like people that would steal anything else. I don't have or own anything, from a cheap pencil to my car, that did not cost me some amount of work but if I leave things laying around there are people who would steal it.
I'm a firm believer u reap what u sow. We all pay the consequences. I would hate to be in their shoes.
