That story gave me the willies. I have a cheap table saw on stand that I have to turn on/off by the plug cause the switch is bad. Need to call the company and get a replacement asap!!!!!
I'd wire a standard light switch on the plug wire if the manufacturer wants to stick it to ya on the switch price. You can mount the box to the outside of the table. I'd opt for an outdoor type box with a cover for the obvious safety reasons.
Good idea. Had never thought of a normal switch??? Heck I could even recess it in the base. Its just a box store grade like $200 Ryobi model. I got from my father in law
I'll update this with a pic of the scar. The wound was pretty pooky hence no pics posted. I've got em if you want to prove a point to a noob. I'll email em. Long of the short is always wear ppe. This was just hedge trimmers.
My adult daughter almost cut her finger off with my electric 18 inch hedge trimmer . She cut through the outside of her little finger and luckily just clipped the bone. I instructed her how to keep from cutting the cord by having it over her shoulder and to never put her hand in front of the handle, but somehow she managed to do what she did, not much more and she would have lost that finger. She is the handyman of her household but ever since then been leery of power tools, but not so paranoid that she didn't use it again. So yeah seemingly not so dangerous power tools can be very dangerous
We were doing a yard clean up for my father. I was on a ladder trimming a bush. Handle was too big for my hands, trigger was too hard to hold down all day, so I used the trigger lock "on" switch. Swung the extension cord over my head to my other shoulder so I could trim the other side of the bush, cord landed in the blades......panicked and tried to hit the trigger (duh, I had switched the on lock), and dropped the trimmer while doing that. It sliced off the heavy guage extension cord and the blades hit my shoe on the way down but did not cut my foot. I was in shorts too My older father happened to walk outside at that time. All he could do is laugh about seeing me say "oh chit" during the split second it took to happen I sent him $5 as a joke to replace the plug on his extension cord and a chuckle of him remembering that scene
it took me about a half an hour after I started using the hedge trimmers when I got them to cut the cord in half. After instructing my ex wife how to use the tool and telling her not to cut the cord in half it took her about five minutes
I told her several times do not cut the cord in half, After I ragged on her for a bit then I told her I did the same thing
I took one to the knee 3 years ago , ive never heard anyone say their sorry for wearin chaps..but ive heard a few say their sorry they didnt .. i cut some knee cap away too that still hurts when i kneel on my left knee , its not about bein a hardass or tough to me its about using some sense..if you are tough , you wont be able to do much with out a leg , its not worth it to me anymore i always wear chaps now.
Thats nasty. Yea I dont care what I look like. I try to wear them all the time. Now some times I tune and test cut or cut a branch in the yard with out them :-(
Don't use a regular switch. You can buy a good job specific switch on Amazon for a few bucks. You want something that you can't bump with your leg and accidentally turn on, but can bump with your leg and turn off in an emergency. The table saw is the most dangerous tool in the shop...don't cut corners.
Good point luken. I still use the cord to cut power even though the switch works sometimes now. I rarely use it as I dont do that many things requiring it. But when every thing else gets done I need to replace it. I am fixing my uncles compressor now. The beating that connects the piston to the motor is cracked and broken.
In my book, you can't bring safety up too often. We all want to get the work done. We all want to go home safe at the end of the day. Takes nads to admit when you messed up, but you are doing everyone a favor when you do. Learning and reminding is ongoing. No one has any business having a saw in their hands unless they are willing to keep learning.
I was in a big hurry for really no reason and paid for it , people that think it cant happen to them are dead wrong..pro/firewooder/homeowner doesnt matter..sh*t happens..and it happens quick sometimes.
Thanks for the reminder, it really is easy to get complacent. I'm happy it wasn't any worse for you.---- I was messing with a loaded pistol about 10 years ago and it went off, I came real close to shooting my foot. Wow! what a wake up call, I keep that bullet where I can look at it as a reminder.
