Well we got in the 90s here in Virginia today, so what better day to spend about 5 hours working up the woodpile? Split for about 3 hours, not consecutively, then hauled a couple of loads out of the woods that had previously been split. Tomorrow I will stack all of this, which amounts to about 6 loads on my Ranger. I MAY be done with wood for the year, depending on how much this stacks out to, or I may have to cut one more dead tree on my property. My son (10 years old) helped too and got his first real experience splitting with a maul. He says he likes it a lot! Splitting with him, I didn't mind the heat that much! The two pics are of the same pile, the second is just a bit closer and leaves out a smaller pile to the right.
Always gooder to have your son at your side, learning to appreciate the work that goes into heating the home! You're a good dad for involving him, red oak !
Nice work! Great job involving your son and showing him how to work, to then enjoy the reward. Seeing the accomplishment and feeling the heat from his hard work will be a lasting impression. My little guy (6) and little girl (3.5) love helping carry and stack smaller splits and running the splitter lever with assistance! It's all about making memories!
I've got a shady spot to split and a wide open spot to stack. In the hottest part of the day I stay in the shade, perhaps venturing out to stack a little else I wait till evening once the sun set.
Nice pile! I think I was around 10 when I first started helping my dad with firewood. He'd buy it from the farmer down the road, already split and stacked for a year. Then we'd stack it in wood shed for another year. By the time I was 12 or 13 I was driving the tractor over there myself, and earning a little extra cash with my friends. I don't mind the heat either. The skeeters usually stay in the woods when its that hot.
Ah, and I'm just sitting here enjoying a 77 degree day. Was outside earlier and it is beautiful....but not beautiful enough to be splitting wood. We'll let red oak do the splitting in this weather.
Dennis, Just got thru having lunch outside. We had the 77 degree day yesterday. Today, she is up to 81 no big deal the humidity is nice and low "the Canucks are leaving the door open". This air is coming from way up in Alberta, nice stuff. There are some advantages to living up in the north woods. Plus, your benefitting from the air over the Lake Michigan and Superior. Still got alot of the haze from the forest fires in the west. The only thing that takes that out of the air is rain. And we are good with that. Take care and hope your feeling better.
My first thought was you are crazy to have been splitting wood on Monday; the heat index was 108 where I am in Va., then I remembered I was pouring concrete on Monday. I hope you get a nicer day if you do have to work up some more wood.
We gotta do what we gotta do when we have the time! Today I hope to finish stacking. Weather should be much more tolerable today, low 80s, with low humidity!
Finished stacking today! All that's left is to take the chainsaw to some chunks and uglies and pile them up into what I'll call my chunks and uglies pile. Should be close to 25 cords when it's all said and done!
Thanks Marty. Yes, those 70 degree days are beautiful. Was the same again today for a while at least. Believe it or not, we got a sprinkle this afternoon. That was a surprise but it is still only 81 outside so nice. Hope it doesn't get any hotter all summer long.
Well, good luck with that one! We've had a couple of days of low humidity which has felt really nice. Temps still in the mid-80s but the humidity makes all the difference. Anyway, nice to be done, ready for fall with all the wood c/s/s. Now I'll give my saw, and myself, a bit of rest!
I had big plans of splitting the remaining silver maple rounds today. About 5 minutes in I said forget it and grabbed a beer..lol.. It's only about 86 with relatively low humidity too. Great work red oak!
