Date with my hydro splitter this weekend

I've got at least 1.5 cord of oak all ready to split. I hope the weather stays dry and cool. I really want to get this stuff split and stacked to give it at least a small chance of being ready for the '16-'17 season..(?)

It got dark before I finished hauling the last of it up to my splitting area tonight. Pictures will definitely follow.

 

16-17 might be pushing it if it was cut green, but some have been surprized. Regardless at least it will be split so you can haul some more.

 

It's oak so I would invest in pallets and review the solar kiln threads and of course pics..

 

I've got the sweet hook-up for pallets. My friend's cousin is a manager at a local Lowes. He lets me have as many pallets as I want. A solar kiln would be a nice project, but I've got way too many "projects" in line already. Fortunately, I've got 16 acres of woodlot with a lot of oak for the long term, but also a lot of fast drying stuff like black birch, cherry, red maple, black gum and tulip poplar, to get my fuel supply started. In fact, the DCNR forester says I should be thinning the birch, maple, and gum anyways. So, I've got no excuse not to have wood to burn other than pure lack of effort on my part.

Got finished early at work today, so I got out and started splitting and stacking my oak. About 3/4 cord all put up. Still have plenty of rounds left for the weekend.

 

Starting tomorrow it's supposed to be in the mid 90's with a chance of storms for the next few days - you can't be too far off our weather..lol.. I hope it at least stays dry for you..

Yeah, I couldn't pass up the cooler, lower humidity weather today. As my dad always said "make hay while the sun shines."

 

Got in a little more splitting and stacking. Full 1.5 cords C/S/S and I still have some more to go.

 

I plan on stacking tomorrow but I just saw this, we'll see what it's like in the morning.

 

Looks like we are on the edge of severe and some t-boomers.

'17-'18 getting off to a great start Finished filling up the 5th pallet to 4' high x 2 rows of 16" splits. That seems to be about 1 2/3 cord, pure oak, maybe 60/40 red/white. I've got about 1/2 cord in an other stack already and got a couple more logs of red on the ground in the woods ready to C/S/S.

 

Good neighbors are a real blessing! My former neighbor loaned me his Kubota 2910 with FEL to finish cleaning up the oak trees I had taken down. I was able to skid the two white oak logs (18" diameter x 10' length) out to the road. This let me retrieve the rest of the firewood that was underneath. I had 3 red oak logs 17-20" diameter that I bucked up into seventeen 16" rounds and transported to the processing deck. MS461 and tractor made short work of that. I also got started on some repairs to our stone lane and grading out my firewood processing deck. All-in-all a great day to take off from "work."

Yes, he is awesome. He had to move about 15 miles away this year due to a divorce and increase in property taxes; however, we still keep in touch. Thankfully, the new neighbors who moved into his old house are super cool, too.
