Our township recently passed a new zoning law. I was paging through it and came to this section. It specifies in great detail what kind of trees you can plant for what kinds of situations. There were many species I have never heard of. Thought some of you might get a kick out of the list. I might even refer to it if I ever have to plant trees near things. They had another section which was for around parking areas, and that is the only place they had the oak, ash, locust etc... Which is good, because 20 years from now I can clean up hardwood storm damage in empty parking lots.
I think they mean that if you build or add under this new ordinance, you are only allowed to plant those species in those situations. Doesn't apply to where I live and my 21 acres. I think I can legally plant anything, except bamboo.
Good grief since when have you had to get permission to plant a tree. This is exactly why I can't handle living in a city........
But it wasn't that close when I planted it. It grew... In our town they do not have rules on what you can plant (except no bamboo) BUT you do need a permit to cut a tree down. Too many people were clear cutting their lots and changing the character of the town. If a tree is greater than 10" diameter 4' up from the ground you need to apply (with pictures and reasons) why you want to take it down. I haven't tried applying with the reason being "heat" yet... Yeah, wait another couple years. Forgot to mention.....the house is the wrong color.......it's not on the "acceptable" list.
Since they couldn't even get the common names and botanical names in the right column's I don't think they are smart enough to tell any body anything.
I've only run into lists like that for street trees, the ones between the sidewalk and the street. I can fully understand their desire to not need to replace a sidewalk due to maple roots tearing it up, so a list in that circumstance makes sense.
So, if you plant the wrong kind of tree do they take it away and try to find it a new home? I've never heard of anything like this before! Sad stuff in my opinion!! I'm sure they are only trying to look out for YOUR best interests though. I guess i just don't like being told what to do by elected officials. Good point you have though Oldman47!
Where I saw a list like that they required you to dig up any tree you planted that did not comply. What you did with it was up to you. If you wanted to, you could plant it in the back yard, just not near the street. I was in SoCal when I ran into it and acceptable "trees" were ones that stayed quite small. In that situation I planted a "golden rain" which did not match the rest of the neighborhood that was all bottle brushes. Here in the midwest I have lilacs that grow larger than those things did.
So true, some locations are really tough on "the right looks" and if it fits. Alot of towns with historical societies that have some muscle will do this.
Yeah, you know, I would expect that if the homes were old Victorians or whatever that were well maintained that no one would want you to put a lean-to on the side of it.
Again, this is totally understandable. It's the weird stuff that gets me. I wonder if they'd mind the bike my wife painted RED and leaned against a tree in front? It's got some nice dead flowers in the basket too.
