Hey guys I'm making some business cards up for my side job (under the table) and would like some input, first and foremost, it's a welding business serving local small time people, farmers, small business, I'm certified through work in a dozen different certifications and have welds pass non destructive testing almost every week, I know what I'm doing.
I'm offering the following, tig welding stick welding and wire feed welding, mobile and in my own shop, I'm not yet insured (so no big liability jobs) most jobs will probably be under 2 grand. So that covers the legalities I know everyone's going to ask about.
One thing I'm not entirely sure of when naming this"business" is this, do I need to worry about a business having the same name? Obviously I'm not going to go and name it after a huge company around here like caterpillar or something like that, but was thinking something local to myself, like my initials, jg welding or dead end welding (we live on a dead end) or hounddog welding and fabrication (we have 3) I'm not going with any of those ideas but something to start off with?
I would like something along these lines and if anyone could help with the"stealing" a business name part that'd be great. I know when or if I actually open such a business on papers I'll need to rethink all of this and is going to be a bit of a pain but any help is appreciated!

Maybe look up synonyms for welding and synonyms for fabrication and see if anything stands out? Also, I have heard about businesses that rearrange letters in words.

We just started up a new business name, piggybacked off of an established business.
Check with registered names, that will help you narrow it down.
Keep it simple and catchy if you can. I like the "JG Welding" myself.- "Hey this broke, who should I call? "- call JG.
We went with "Infinity Certified Welding". Better ones were claimed already.
"Infinity" = BuzzLightyear = Toystory = anyone with kids knows this. You'd be amazed at the responses I get and we're new as of 6/1/15. My $0.02.
Good luck, best wishes for the future........may you get some sleep at some point.

shaggy- if it was my call, I'd go with -"Arc Light Welding". Here's why...
Arc light- kinda self explanatory, what happens after you yell-"Cover..!"
Arc Light- a character in an X-Men movie
Arc Light- an airborne operation in Vietnam.
It always sounded "catchy" to me.

Plus it's two syllables. If you answer the phone 400 times a day like I do, " Arc Light, this is XXXX" is better than "Infinity Certified Welding, this is XXXX".
"JG, this is XXXX" works even better. Your call.

I like arc light, and I really like the 2 syllables, I originally wanted to do the dead end welding, but thats kind of like naming a bank broke azz bank. Last resort lol. I'll keep that one in mind, I'll have to put pictures up of what I've got so far.

Arc... Light can be pulled together too, to form the one word name ArcLight (good start for logo workup)... I like it, and if you're listed on yellow pages, etc... you're in the "A"s... all good. Good luck with the biz...

That's a added bonus that I didn't think of as well, being first in any search, which is never a bad thing!

My 2 cents... your welding jobs behind you will determine 90% of your future work, so having a name that's easy to remember can sure help. In today's world too, social media can work well. Pictures of previous jobs you liked working on that show off your skills, are always a winner. And don't forget "action" shots of you doing your thing, rather than just slick looking welds and finished projects. Thinking ArcLight would go well with a pic of you all lit up/sparks flying pushing a bead.

suggestion, register the name , or when you go fulltime/legal it may be taken and then you get to start all over.

also think about Inc. and LLC, someone will take one of them. We are Inc. and keep the LLC registered so no one takes it. Down the road if the Inc. goes under or is sold, we still own the name as an LLC. Might be more involved than you want to be but just a thought.

Registering the name as mentioned is a good idea. I'd also look into setting your business up as a LLC as you continue to grow. It isn't a huge amount of money to do that, and it protects you personally should something go wrong. Say you do some repairs on a trailer, and two months later the axle falls off and causes a wreck. Might be completely unrelated to anything you did to the trailer, but lawyers are lawyers, and they'll come after anything they think they have a chance of getting their hands on.

This is old school but I remember when people would use the yellow pages. They would open to the section and start calling alphabetically. A lot of people named their business with a word that starts with A to be up in the front.
