Found this at the tree dump. Bark looked like silver maple...but the leaves aren't. Any idea?

That be ash. When you get it home and split, pull some bark off and see if it has some signs of EAB.

Doesn't look like it has been eaten on yet from the EAB.

I was thinking box elder, but when I saw what I think to be the seeds, I think ash. The bark isn't diamond like most ash, however there are so many variables. Box elder seeds are hook like the maple family. ash is more straight.

Per recent history, I will not be attempting to ID trees for any member including myself:whistle::loco:

Someone is gonna show a pic of balsa and I'll ID it as a black locust white oak hedge apple hybrid  :rofl:

Fear not. It is very difficult most times giving ID from pictures.

Just in past hour I went look at pair of free older bed rails off Craigslist.Barely a mile from home.Owner said they were ''walnut'' & the metal brackets were broke but the wood was OK.Pic looked pretty good, like they were either stained clear maple or tulip poplar.Pulled up to the curb to discover they were MDF (medium density fiberboard) with a walnut decal overlay. :picard:

I got back in the truck & came back home.

Oh well the good scores of free building material/odds & ends has far outweighed the bad for me in the past 3-4 years.

That's the problem with that bug. By the time you realize a tree is infected it is almost to late. 2 reasons I wondered about EAB was the amount of seeds the tree was showing in pic #1. Kinda unusual for an ash in Iowa this time of year. In pic #2 you can see the new sucker sprouts growing from parts of the trunk or a major limb where they shouldn't be. Both are good signs that the tree was under some kind of stress before it was cut down. Those EAB larvae will crawl around under the bark of a healthy tree for up to 3 years before they decide to gnaw their way back out as an adult leaf eater.

Went back to look it over a bit. Found exit(?) holes but I don't think it's the shape of eab...or is it?

Looks very typical of the EAB. You can bet that is what it is.

Gave the forester a call today. He will check it out and call me back. He stated he had to look at any tree that is reported to have eab.

A lot of mine by the roadside look just like this. I'm very interested to know what he says. I've suspected it's early signs of EAB as well, but I've been reluctant to call and ask for any "government help" with it.
