I thought stacking against the back wall of the garage was a nice, out of the way place for stacks. No sun there at all. good for seasoned wood, but not fresh wood. stacking out in the middle of the yard now.

I'm finding this whole idea very intriguing. I'm three years (or better) ahead on my wood and I'm still inclined to try this on a pile or two :loco:

Opened up the January kiln of pecan, well actually the Sun did it- image.jpg

3 years laying on the ground- in the kiln since January, plastic shredded for a week, with additional moisture from tropical storm Bill(?), on a fresh split face with el cheapo moisture meter...

He's pondering your findings not only with one pipe but with two pipes....:sherlock:+ :sherlock:... But those are interesting findings kinda of what what one should expect. Did your plastic just break from UV light breaking down the plastic?

    UV breakage...

Late in the day photo- usually in the sun from 8am til 7pm, summer time.

    Eric,
Just wanting to see if I had the facts correct.
Lots of variables. Rainfall, wet ground, sun or shade.
Seems like the kiln really worked well:thumbs:
Wonder how dry the kiln wood would have been if the plastic had not shredded .

Yeah, I would have liked to have had a totally sealed set up til say, August. But I agree- not too bad on the different readings.
And a tree laying down definitely doesn't shed its moisture! As I may have mentioned, that pecan was knocked down by the "derecho" of 2012.
I wish my dad would listen to me..... about that, and the 3 year plan...

Did you pull out multiple pieces to test, top, middle and bottom?

I can unfold the side of mine and get to some pieces inside. The bottom is lagging behind the top on mine.

No sir, mine was pulled from top 1/3... The plastic is so UV damaged, I just need to move it all to w/shed- the higher MC wood from the bottom of the kiln will end up on the top of the stack, if I'm careful that is....

I'm thinking of trying this with a couple cords of oak this week to see where its at come October. What's the best plastic to buy? Those big rolls from HD? What thickness of plastic is best?

I would suggest 2 mil clear.

How long has the oak been split and drying in the open?
