So I've got this firewood rack that was in my barn when I bought the place. It has the basic U-shaped frame that many have, but the bottom pieces seem different. Am I missing some parts, or just common sense? It seems if I were to block a 4x4 going cross ways, it wouldnt be very sturdy. But then again, i havent tried it yet. Picture 1 is my rack. Pic 2 is a similar rack that belongs to someone on the forum. Anyone have a similar rack with the S- brackets?
What are the dimensions of the openings when the "s" bracket is on the up-right? It does not look like a 4x4 will fit? It looks like a 2x4 would fit in the gap. It also looks like the bracket that is already on the upright might be upside down. Put the larger opening near the floor and probably facing outward for a little more stability... KaptJaq
The "s" bracket doesnt have a hole in the bottom, so I dont think its possible to put it on upside down. The height from the floor to the shelf of the bracket is 3 3/4 inches. A 4x4 will fit, i just need to pick one up. It just doesnt seem like it would be as sturdy as the other design.
Does it want the frame wood, a 2x4, to go through the top hole to raise the firewood off the floor a little? It would permit more air to circulate... KaptJaq
Not sure how that would work. Seems like it would just tip over. Maybe I just need to get some lumber and experiment a little bit.
My vote is a 2X4 through the top part of the S between it and the upright to keep the 2X4 off of the ground. On the last picture just turn them 90 degrees.
