OK so I have this stove and this bad addiction to burning wood the only problem is my stove will out burn my but. Meaning I try to cut as much as possible but it still eats more than I can cut. On a normal east Texas winter I will burn 4-5 cords starting end of November- early March. But I would like to know is how do you slow down the rate a which it burns. If I the flue on top it will still burn up by morning even if I fill it at 10 pm it is gone by 5:30am. And the stove is cold!!! This thing is a monster. It has a three speed blower, also a fan flame. And I can close the flue on top. Any one else have this problem?

Sounds like an air draft problem? Is your stove getting too much air? I'm not too familiar with that brand of stove in the first place, is it an older smoke dragon or a more modern EPA stove? Does it have secondary burn tubes or a cat?

What size is the firebox? How old is the stove?

For sure if it is an old stove, you are using a lot more wood than necessary. In our case, we used to burn from 5-7 1/2 cord per winter. Bought a new Woodstock Fireview and immediately cut our needs to 3 cord. In addition, we used to be cold all winter but with the Fireview, we keep the house around 80 degrees all winter.

Another thing is the fuel. We find that many do not fully realize the importance of drying the wood. Cutting this year what you will burn this year just doesn't get it. If you are doing that, you definitely will burn more wood because you have to draft so much that most of the heat goes up the chimney. Get on the 3 year plan and smile all the way.

Looks to be a sub 2ft cat stove just from a quick Google search

my Englander, NC-13 got over 14 cord pushed thru it this year. but not sure how something that small could be a monster? Of course listen to backwoods first... then consider what type of wood you using? do you use both the stove damper and flue damper? how big is your house how well insulated etc..

I have no clue what model my stove is. It does not have a cat or a reburner.

Post a picture, but it sounds like you have an inefficient stove. What kind of weird are you burning, and what's the moisture content of the wood? Backwoods Savage method is to allow wood enough time after splitting the wood to ensure the wood is properly seasoned. Until you get far enough ahead with wood, you can also use moisture meter and burn quick drying species, or cut dead trees as they might be dry enough already.

I took a look at their website and I'm guessing that what you have is a cat stove that is missing the cat. If so that would explain its appetite for wood and the quick burn times.

Where you close off the flue on top, is that part of the stove or in the stovepipe?

It is part of the stove.

For those asking what I burn. Here in east Texas I am a wood snob I only burn red and white oak. There is other stuff here but in my wood stove that is it. I save the pecan, hickory for my smoker.

If it's part of the stove I'm pretty sure that it isn't a flue damper but a cat bypass. And since you said there is no cat then my guess is as I speculated before, it's missing.

But the real question is how long after you cut and split the wood do you leave it before burning it?

I agree with Paul. It sounds like you are flipping the bypass lever on the stove.

There should be a metal tag on it, probably on the back. It may have been glued on and fallen off, though.
Yep, I think Appalachian makes mostly, if not all, cat stoves. Hog, you need to get a replacement cat. combustor, replace all the gaskets, then sit back and watch the stove sip wood. This is assuming the stove is in good shape, no warping or cracked welds causing air leaks etc. If there's no tag for ID, can you post pics? Take some pics inside too, to help us evaluate the condition of the stove.

OK so the only air I can see coming in is through the bottom grate. Where would a cat be? Is it located on the stove pipe?

I would dare to guess that the cat is behind that thermometer on the front of the stove.

From left to right in the front across the bottom the fan motor on the left and the toggle switches. Then in the middle is the draft fan and on the right is the clean out for the bottom grate

Hog_Hunter_57 Hunter, as you've already realized, some thing is way wrong if you are burning 4-5 cords/winter. Assuming they are real cords not face cords.??? Is the house insulated, how well? Does it leak air like a sieve? Regardless, some old stoves are just very inefficient, none are as efficient as a modern EPA stove. I'm not familiar with your stove but it may be inefficient by design. And of course, wet wood is inefficient in all wood stoves. I burn 1.5 cords and heat with 100% wood. Heating 1536 sqft, newer, tight, well insulated, awesome cat stove.

I think that is a slide, controlling the linkage in pic 3. Damper control maybe?

So I just called the company and they told me to drop the damper assembly and if it has cats they will be located above there I will try tonight.
