I picked up a "Mosser Lee Co." test kit at Lowes. How accurate are these things? I'm getting ready to plant some apple trees so I wanted to see what condition the dirt was in. My results- pH test- 7 Nitrogen- low Phosphorus- low Potassium- high If these kits are accurate, then I'll have a bit of soil conditioning to do. What-cha' think?
Beetle, I am going out this afternoon to pick some strawberries where they have apple picking in the fall. I know the fella fairly well so if he is around I ask him and report back. I also wondered about those test kits too. In the past I have sent a soil sample into our county extension agent. I don't even know if they have extension agents anymore.
If contact your local extension service, they will either send you a kit or tell you how to gather a soil sample. They will test it, (here is the good part) they will also tell you what to do to your soil to bring it up to what you want it to be specifically for the intended growing purpose. I did that once and had fantastic results. Your soil is PH 7, very good. The other too low items are common and need to be amended on a regular schedule.
