This last weekend my son and I decided to make a Frankenstien as he calls it Frankie for short. It all started last year I recieved from a barter a 1997 jonsered 2065 open port for some 3 face cords. The saw was a nightmare cylinder, piston scored, just about everything broke or cobbled with wrong screws, just about every spring broke.I didn't no where to begin so it sat.Until recently I bought a used 365 special 03 model from that other site. Didn't have to give much and I found out why when I got it. The tank was epoxyed together just waiting to bust compression showed 120 so I removed the cylinder which looked good through the holes, no visible scoring. But I found a bur was holding one side of the ring in causing it to not expand lightly scored. So anyway been doing alot of research about how to clean up the transfer on cylinders so I gave it a shot; used some emery cloth, made a mandrel and a scotch pad and went to town on the jonsered cylinder. After that I decided to cleanup the exhaust port but ended up grinding a little eperiment on some porting. I cleaned up the old piston (365) after much thought looking thru a magnifying glass at the ring, lightly sanded it with some 400 emery used that also.I Know what your thinking but it looked great. Put it all back together, deleted the gasket used some Hondabond. I had to use the old Zama carb took it apart and cleaned it all up.The Walbro had a busted adjusting screw.I dremeled slot for screwdriver cleaned it up.I got it running and it would die when I hit the throttle so I threw the Zama on. So after a showing signs of life, my son was excited as I was.Today Frankenstien lives, running good adjusted the needles to factory 1 1/4 settings little rough in the beginning I think because of the 2 cycle we used for the installation.I should have taken some pics with cylinder off .This was my first stab at porting. Here are some pics of Frankie. I'm really short on funds right now, so when I can I will buy a new Walbro carb and a new Meteor ring and piston. It's hard to say in words how excited we are about working on this together. This saw means more than the other saws because the son and I got to share the fun.
You had me interested in your story from the moment I saw the first picture, a bunch of saw parts in a box. I just finished watching the first year of the Penny Dreadful series on showtime, Dr Frankenstein is a part of this show. My question from the last pictures is; Is the plastic on one side Husky and the other Jonsered? Nice post
Great story and pics !!! I collect lanterns... And i do frankies with them as well. Its a really cool idea
Tell you what, I think I have a 365 Meteor around here from an experimental saw. Near new $20 shipped.
Today I could not wait to get my hands on this saw.I did some research on the carb and realized the screws only turn out 1 on the high and low instead of 1 1/2 took it back apart took a feeler gauge to the meter lever and adjusted it like I should have done the first time put the tach on it tuned it in.I thought I was going to get a new carb but its likes the Zama c3m starts on the first pull wasn't expecting that.I got it runnin at 11500 rpms seems a little fat but thats Okay for now.It sounds great kinda like my 346 xp a little. It's already a favorite
I used a off brand dremel and went at it little in the intake side and more on the exhaust side then used home made mandrel and some emery spent some time on it smothing it out.
Lately I cant keep my hands off this saw and I own a few others I was having trouble tuning it in took the junk Zama off and put on a Walbro 12b I believe but still was having trouble then realized the throttle cable was stretched from previous owner that had the safety all busted up for the throttle.I took some copper wire and wraped it around cable to take up the slack which gave it full throttle. It only has about 5 tanks thru it since the build and seems to just get stronger.Ive been leaving a tach on it while using it for cuttin firewood and its 4 strokin at 14,100 it climbs up to so to speak. I dont own any ported saws from any of the buiders yet and seems like this is a taste of what it is probaly like but dont know never ran one.
I just wanted to add also this is a open port 48mm. I have a nice closed port and new piston and ring but dont feel any need to put it on or even a 50mm which I have saving it for my 365 special.
