My BIL heats his home with wood. Today he found out he needs knee surgery that could put him down and out for 3-4 months, then limited duty for another 2-3. His wife is more than capable of tending the stove, but the last time I checked he didn't have a single stick of wood cut for this upcoming season. You never know when life will throw you a curve ball.
I wasn't out of action that long, but I got behind even further after last year's surgery. Still trying to get caught up. If he'd had this winters wood put up 3 years ago, no problem, eh?
I had rotator cuff torn in 2 places and bicep pulling off the bone. Had surgery and spent 1 month in a sling. I got soo bored sitting I found if someone started the 066 for me I could hold it enough to get the dogs to bite and run it. Now getting the rounds in the trailer were a chore! I figured there were enough guys with 1 arm that worked every day that I should not feel bad for myself so I did what I could. Also had to cobble rig the lawn mower for 1 arm use, LOL. Where their is a will there is a way.
I see two reasons in this. His - you never know what curves life will throw at you. Yours - you never know when you will have an opportunity to help another in need. Both are great reasons. Greg
Yeah, I'd help him too. And lecture him too. Interesting view of his though. My appendicitis this winter put me behind, but I'm only behind because I'm no longer 4 years ahead.
This is one of the things we list in the 3 year plan. Life does throw curve balls at you from time to time. Some get lucky; some get hurt bad. I think of Steve, the fire chief in IL when he was hospitalized a few summers ago. He's never fully recovered from his accident but is able to finally work again. If it was not for his son, he may not have been able to stay ahead on his wood pile. I was at Steve's place a couple months ago and his wood piles look super now!, but it could have gone the other way easily. We've read about others on this forum who have had similar things happen (things that kept them from putting up wood for an extended period) and even with myself, I'll be having another surgery very soon and we really do not know how long I'll be down. In addition, some serious sickness put me down just a couple months ago. What if I had only a year's supply or worse, just starting to think about cutting this year's supply? Heaven forbid!!!! Good luck to your BIL.
+1 on getting several years ahead - hoping to be there by fall -1 on lectures - people do what they want; set a good example and you are lucky if someone follows it
