I have had sugar maple fly off the splitter and go 20 feet, but the way the other splitter was I was never in the way and never got hit
How in hell did we get here? Eric VW drove this bus---jus sayin...from a splitter score to nad dichotomy...Is there any more beer?
Yea for $400, you couldn't go wrong. it'll pay for itself in no time at that price. Do like HDRock did with his, go thru it & check /change the fluids filters. Check bolts & hose, little light oil/WD on the rusty parts. A little TLC will make it last many more years Have fun !
So, I am walking thru Fleet Farm yesterday afternoon. They have the Speeco 22 ton gas-Briggs engine for $999.00 and they have the other brand (can't remember the name) 25 ton with a Kohler engine for $998. Both come unassembled and they charge $75 to assemble. Brand new. So, $400 for a used splitter is about right half the new price. Both were horizontal and vertical, nice units.
Yikes!! I moved out of the way and stood off to the side when I heard the engine straining, or else my nuts may have been smashed!
Looks like a good splitter but perhaps not taken care of well. First thing is to check the oil levels, tighten bolts, etc. Also put some oil on that beam and run the ram down and up a couple times and every time you store the splitter, do that with oil. Best to not use grease on the beam; stick with oil. And always remember that oil is cheaper than metal.
As for getting hurt from wood flying off the splitter, split the right way and no worries! And no, I've never been worried about the family jewels getting hurt while splitting wood. More likely to pinch fingers while handling wood.
good point with the oil , a lot of surface rust came off just from testing it out, the steel is a little pitted by the ram, but nothing major. What kind of oil are you using on the beam?
