Got a pick-up load this morning but not sure of what..,. Not the easiest to split but not that bad. The only leaf is the small one that sprouted out of one of the rounds on top of the round on the right. Thanx, KaptJaq
Papadave I think is correct. I burn Sycamore, it dries out pretty quickly not the best BTU's but not bad either. Splitting it can be a challenge though....
Definately sycamore. Tons of them around here, but ironically, none on my property. If conditions are right, they can grow to be HUGE-- bigger than a grand ole oak. One of the strangest looking trees, in my opinion.
I agree, now that you have given me something to look for, it looks like sycamore. I've just hand split a half dozen rounds and it is not as easy as red oak but a lot easier than elm. All the rounds I have are clean and straight which helps with the splitting. As for BTUs: Sycamore, American Platanus occidentalis, 2,890 pounds/cord, and 17.9 MBTU/cord. Right in the middle of the list with hedge at 30.0 MBTU/cord & white cedar at 11.0 MBTU/cord. KaptJaq
Seems there are areas with lots of it and then you can drive for many miles before seeing another. See them in yards quite a bit or in fencerows.
