Found some White oak on craigslist. Started at 9am. Finished at 6pm. What a pain in the Butt! It was already cut, but it was in the back yard. You had to go through a covered breezeway from the garage, down 3 small steps onto the patio. The logs were probably 35" across and being an oak in South Bend it had a ton of knots. Had to bust each round 5-6 times to carry each piece up the damm steps to the drive way. Then load them on my hand truck and wheel them 80 feet to the street! Then load onto the truck. I got 3 loads out, 20 miles each way. I should get a full cord out of this. If it had not been white oak I would of left it. I am typing this with my nose cause I cannot raise my arms! LOL.
White oak is great....Lol....What we do for "Free" wood...Good job and happy burning in a couple years...
tell me about it! I get all my free wood off C/L, it aint free once you factor everything in that sounds like some serious work getting that out of the backyard. How much wood do you figure you got in those 3 loads?
Wow thats alot of work, i love firewood but hate packing it that far. That would not happen where i live, as there is no white oak. Got hardwood trees in town but most of it is elm and maple. Congrats on your score it dont get no better than white oak.
Might be a cord, I'll get it split and stacked this week I hope. The way my luck runs, I go months without anything, then it seems I get swamped with it.
Especially if it was a yard tree... Yep, I worked my butt off yesterday, hauling some Cherry up a rip-rap slope. But it sounds like you worked a lot harder than I did; Cherry is easy to split, and you got three loads to my one. At least it was cool yesterday. Hard to pass on White Oak, no matter the weather. Might be the best, IMO.
You go man I have done that, hauled wood up a 45 degree slope with a dusting of snow on the grass, why did I do it? because my mouth overloaded my azz, but hey you do what you got to do
HDRock, yup, understand about the mouth, White oak is probably my favorite firewood. The big reason I did this was I called him Thursday when the add ran. He said he would hold the wood until Sat. when I got off work. Sat. morn. it was raining, so I asked if he would wait until Monday, he said yes. so when I got there Monday morning and saw what the situation was I figured he held this wood for me longer than he had to, and I am sure he turned down other people. I had aske him to wait and he did, so I was not going to renig on our deal because it was going to cost me some sweat equity. Had I known prior, I probably would of walked away!
Around the yard and in the woods, I get help hauling wood with a little 2-wheel cart from NT. Cost ~$30. In the woods, I split the rounds to a size that'll stay on the cart, and haul away. You really don't want to kill yourself carrying out lots of wood by hand. Depending on conditions, a cart like that can tote up to a couple hundred pounds, which I can not do by hand. The cart probably weighs 5 lbs.
Yeah ,I already said I would get it out so I had to suck it up and do it , since then I ask a lot more questions before I commit to anything
Got off my butt today and split up the oak. It was hotter than snot out there today! The big uglies in the front right goes to a buddy with an outdoor burner. You can see a few of my plastic pallets I stack on. someone at work accepted a semi load of these plastic pallets. Since all our products go out on specific types of pallets and these are not them, work gave me 26 of them for free to get rid of them. I was too slow to get the whole truck load but I was happy with what I got. I still have to stack this mess but the heat and humidity was bad.
I'm glad you found some wood on CL with some actual heating value. Some of the listings I've seen lately are good for a laugh or two. One of them was for a pile of brush that was described as "firewood". Yeah buddy, I'll be right over to clean that up for ya!!!
I see that almost weekly around here too.Am very selective on what ads I respond to. Only ads I reply to without a picture is when my tree service contact is removing stuff & he has to get rid of it fast. Never posts any pics cause he really knows his trees.
Hard for me to pass on the White Oak; It ain't available all that often. You want to score as easy as possible but I'll work harder if need be, for wood I like. "Will work for White." While the Reds on our property go down left and right, the Whites just keep standing there, thumbing their noses at me.
