Walnut or Ash....confused (big surprise :) )

I'm always a little confused between a walnut and an ash until the walnuts show up.

What is this one?

Here's at tip .......always remember "MAD HORSE".
Maple, ash, dogwood, and horsechesnut trees are all opposite branching ! Take another look at that tree and you tell us!

Crush the leaves and smell. You will know if it's walnut.

Walnut is my guess.
Is it soon to be firewood ?

 

A bit of it. Have to take down a limb. If it's walnut I will take it home. If it's ash I won't move it but split it up for an older neighbor and let him burn it in his stove.

 

I saw one older one some what near it...but I know there are a lot of squirrels in the area too, so they might be doing what squirrels do.

 

In my area there's an unfortunately easy way to tell the difference with 99% certainty. If it's alive, it's not ash.

 

Black Walnut.

 

It's definitely walnut, but I'd almost lean towards white walnut aka butternut given the appearance of the bark. Could just be the lichens or the colors getting washed out in the pics though. The walnuts produced by white walnuts are fig-shaped, while black walnuts are rounder.
