I came home to a 62 degree house myself today. It was raining and damp all day and the house wasn't going to get any warmer. So I had to haul a little bit of wood in to take the chill off. First fire in 3 weeks. Around here a fire in May, especially this late, is pretty rare. But you gotta do what you gotta do, and I don't cut all this wood to be chilly.
Yep got a fire going here in Maryland today... definitely not the norm for May 21... Although when I lived up in PA.. I remember just a few years ago getting a couple inches snow the first week of May...
Fire going now, cool all day and below freezing tonight. I refuse to be even mildly cool when I don't have to be.
They say we might hit 27 tonight, we had one fire last night and one fire this morning while having coffee so we'll have another tonight and in the morning over coffee. We'll finish the garden tomorrow (put up the fence) along with planting the tomato plants in the buckets.
they are predicting 20s, tonight fires lit. young plants are covered hope the apples blossom make it!
And we have blast off... Gave in and lit a fire. I'm spoiled: it's 64 in here and I am COLD. Did a lot of mulching today, after watering, and my hands were frozen, between the cold well water and the brisk wind. Woodlands, do you grow your tomatoes in the buckets? Above ground? Drainage holes in the buckets? Why, and what soil mix do you use, and do you use any fertilizers, and how does it work for you? Did you start your tomatoes inside, and what varieties do you grow? Which are your favorites? My current seeds are from 2002, and still I am getting 100% germination. I'm always trying new things with my tomatoes. Am thinking about leaning them against cattle fencing this year, with buckets with drainage holes sunk in the ground, maybe 5 plants around one, for watering. And, I think I may transplant some of my bee balm around them. I have borage and hollyhocks in the bed, to attract bees for pollination.
I built another fire this morning. My first 2 split fire. I was expecting a slow smolder but it worked well. Took awhile, but the Keystone got up to temp and managed a good cat burn. I'm down to 1 split left on the porch, hopefully I'm done for the season.
44° forecast for here tonight. Was 70° today, 1st night in a while I won't cover some plants. Fire might be going tonight though, rain forecast tomorrow with a high temp of 58°.
32 last night and frost advisory until 11:47 this AM. I'm worried about the beans.....and the fruit trees. Think the other crops will likely be O.K.
Covered all the rose bushes last night but it never went down as cold as predicted. Looks to be the last of the cold for now. I've held off but the garden plants are going in this weekend. 24 tomatoes, 20 peppers, 9 zuchs, 9 cukes.....and some marigolds on the edge
