Dad got us a score at a horse farm about 2 miles from my place. He had taken down a tree for the owner about 10 years ago. Dad noticed he had a few standing dead trees inside the pasture and stopped to ask if he wanted us to take them down for him. The owner was more than happy to let us take them down and take the wood. Turns out it's way more than a few. I counted 12 inside the fence and another 6+ along the outside of the fence line, some are 24" or better. A mix of red/chestnut oak, cherry and mulberry<< (I think). Best part is we can cut at our leasure and back right up to the trees. Here's the first load, cut last night and hauled out today.
Oh baby ! Great Score ! Gonna have a hoard ready for the next few winters. A lot of the dead standing stuff, after CSS'd a few months, will be usable for 15/16

Some were killed by the horses but the bigger oaks were a few that just couldn't recover from the gypsy moth problem we had a few years ago. Took tons of old oaks out around here. Normally we would charge to do a job this big but since it's so close and he and his son are helping run some of the smaller branches through the chipper, plus the fact that we can come and go as we please. It's a no brainer
Smokin, that for sure is a no brainer. I've read that many had oaks die after gypsy moths attacked. We worried some here back in the late 80's but it turned out well. We had them for 3 years if my memory is right. Still see some every year but not many.
Yep, we had them 3 years in a row and they ate the hardwoods clean. Once the hardwoods were stripped they went after the softwoods which is unusual. Many trees just couldn't recover from the shock.
Standing dead oak my absolute favorite to cut, split and burn. Congrats on the find. Never know what you might get until you take time to ask!
