Maybe we too are behind the times but that just is a lot of money for these things. We don't watch much tv at all (maybe 5 or 6 times a year) and just use an outside antenna. No cable here and not really interested in satellite.

    Thanks! We'll look into it.
I did rabbit ear for a few year back in the '90's and I survived. Now days I need me some live sports and on demand movies so I'm stuck with cable or an alternative :-(

that seems a bit high, I have tv mid grade package with 2 premium channels, internet, landline for quite a bit less than that, deal expires at end of year so i expect it to go up, that when i change providers. Its just a big game between the 2 cable providers in my area

    Internet fax?

Or get real modern and scan the documents in the computer and email them.

I work for a multi-million dollar company that's part of another huge company and I've not seen the fax used for anything more than scribbing down a lunch order to send to the local Deli.

I use a Wilson amplifier (find them online), and it makes all the difference for me. From very poor signal (0 bars), to good signal (full bars) in the "zone" around the amplifier.

Two of my friends installed cell amplifiers on their shops, and one on his house. Both had decent signal outside and basically no signal inside. They work good. Not sure the brand, but they were about $65 delivered from ebay.

I paid closer to $200 used, about a year ago. I am guessing there are some off-brand ones available for south of $100. They might be good as well.

The Wilson makes my signal stronger inside than it is outside. That is with my antenna in the attic, I would do better if I put it outside.

It took us from 0 to reliable texting, but voice calls are usually dropped, and internet is takes several minutes per page, too much waiting..... Either way I am still pleased to be able to text!

Got rid of mine years ago. If I had the extra money, then I would keep it because the reception is always 100X better than cell phones.

wildwest, I am in same boat the amplifier helped me get texts, I pay about 150 for cable, Internet and land line Comcast. Cell does not work reliably in house so when I drive down road to farm I get tons of msgs... my wife won't have a cell.. so we have a land line.. I had no TV for 5 years before wife and daughter but my wife likes to watch the Waltons and old westerns at night.. and of course kids and cartoons.

If you have reliable internet, get a VOIP service like vonage or something like the magic jack. I had vonage for a few years when i was in a bad cell service area. worked fine. now, pure cell for me.

faxing, there's online services for that. Scan in, make it a pdf, and you pay 3 cents to have your pdf get 'faxed' out the other end. If you need encryption.... you shouldn't be faxing it either.

I get a black box from Verizon, and I plug the base of my phones into it or I can plug it into my existing house wiring and use my phones like normal. When I got on vacation, I take the base unit and a phone with me, and plug it into the black box and I have my home number with me where ever I go. It works very well, and is cheap, $20 a month.

I used to pay in the mid $30s per month for dial tone (no LD included) with caller ID from the Death Star (AKA AT&T). I sent them packing around 3 years back when they decided they wouldn't offer DSL to rural areas anymore. Heck, they probably wouldn't even offer dial tone to my area if the FCC didn't make them.

I do not enjoy the "delay" that seems to be common with the use of cell phones. It shows up while you are talking and just when you think the other is finished speaking, you start to reply and end up talking over each other.
That being said, we have charter cable (hate 'em!) and I think the phone part of it is around $30 monthly.

I am still waiting for antenna internet, the tower should be up in a couple weeks. I will look into cancelling my landline after I get a feel for the new internet. I registered with the emergency management at my new home, both hubby & I, cell phones, home phone, and email addresses, I would think that should be sufficient?

Zero a month but I am running a PBX and routing through Google Voice. I guess the cost of running the PBX is the cost of my landline and I have two numbers coming into the house. Of course Google is changing things with Google Voice, like dropping the xmpp connections and no one knows yet what they will do. One can still connect through xmpp but for how long is anyone's guess.
