It's no beauty queen, the choke is inoperable, the carb is leaking gas but it starts, both e start and recoil, runs well once warm, brakes are good, it has a trailer ball on it and it fits nicely on the trailer. Got it for 1k after getting him down 250. I tried to go lower but that was his bottom line. I understood where he was coming from. I'll take t the carb of and hopefully a cleaning fixes the leak. Could be a stuck float or needle valve. Petcock seems to maybe not work too. But hard to tell without taking the fuel line off.

 

The reverse lockout is disabled too, I guess that many people take them off. So, when shifting, it already got me as down all the way on the foot shifter is reverse, not first like on a bike, or a non reverse manual shift quad. Its R, N, 1,2,3,4,5 . I reversed over the dog doody pile on the edge of the tall grass. Oh well. No real harm. The reverse and the neutral lights do work, so that's good


I'll need to put some fog lamps on it. There's only 1 light in front of the 2 original, and it broken.

I'll put some pics up of my progress on the fixing up of the beast.

I can lift this quad up easily. It's so light. No liquid cooling, no frills, no chain to oil, as it has front and rear driveshafts.

Put some on the back too for late night wood moving. Makes hooking up a trailer, etc, a lot easier.

Yeah, I did some reasearch on the keihin carb on the kawi bayous. They all do this leaking deal. They are susceptible to crud getting under the needle/ seat combo, and they pee gas out. The petcock can be rebuilt with new o rings or a kit. The float valve can sometimes be cleaned out, sometimes need the seat to be refinished as the seat is not replaceable as in most carbs. A little polishing usually fixes it, if not, the float hangs on something you can't see or feel once you put the bowl back on. Hopefully it just needs cleaning and a petcock rebuild.

If that won't do it, a Honda keihin carb from a trx300 fits right on, no issue, and that carb has a choke on the carb, so I could remove the choke cable and control on the handlebars.

The keihin from the trx300 put on the bayou gets rid of the cold bloodedness of the machine with the stock keihin. There's also a Chinese knock off of a keihin that you can buy on eBay for under $100 that guys have used too.

Keihin is owned by Honda, so it's no surprise that the similar, but minorly different Honda version of the carb works better. The guys that have swapped the trx carb on the bayou say it runs better than it did when off the showroom floor, more power, everywhere and no choke even needed until it gets well below freezing.

I'll dig into it this weekend. It's easy to work on, from what it seems. You can see it all once you take the seat off.

 

Nope. Got home from work, hopped back in the car with my wife, then met my parents out for dinner. It's mom's 71st bday, so we met up for dinner.

Maybe I'll take a gander at it tomorrow after work. I have a feeling the 1/2 gallon of gas I put in it is in the dirt under the quad. Rebuilding the petcock is number 1 if that's the case.

i've been eying a 2 wheel drive 300 bayou on c-list, not that i need another wheeler, but the price is right, may still go look at it, my big red 250 gets the job done every time, and i already have a nice '94 220 bayou to play around on............................a pic of my 250 red, the 300 i may look into, and my 220............

 

Well the bayou started right up today after work. About 2 cranks and it started right up. No stalling. I turned the petcock to off, and no gas smell and it wasn't empty after it sat from Tuesday night until Friday night. So it sounds like that isn't needing replacement/ rebuilding. The carb it's the issue, but it runs well enough as is. I'll charge the battery tonight.

I drove it around the yard and avoided some terd piles for Eric VW .

After dinner I'll dink on it some more.

 

Well, I got the lights to work, well, what lights there are. There's only 1 headlight, and the lens is cracked. That 1 headlight has no business working, but it works on low and high, and the tailights He had the light switch disconnected. So the good news is the lighting coil works, and I assume the battery will charge while its running. I'll get some sort of new lights on it. Maybe fog lights, probably LED ones. I'll also have to put a cigarette lighter or usb adapter so u csn charge a phone or run a spotlight. I found a good spot on the front rack for a beer holder.

I took some more pics, rode it for a good hour in the yard. It runs better than it did when the guy sold it to me. It's not perfect running, but it's honestly pretty decent. I'll still clean the carb. I see the airbox is disconnected, but I think that's so the carb doesn't flood the airbox? I washed it, but it was too dark to take after pics. I even cleaned the white wheels, which, to be honest is the thing I hate most about the quad. That's easily fixed though.

The rear brake doesn't work, but it may just be a rusted lever. The rear lever doesn't move at all. I used penetrating lube on all fasteners I might even possibly want to remove.

The battery is in the garage getting charged overnight.

I also cleaned out the trunk. Yummy.
